Jean Piaget

Child Development Theorists

Jean Piaget

lived from 1896-1980. He was a Swiss psychologist and educator. He researched and defined the mental, or cognitive, skills that children learn.

How it began

Piaget began by observing his own three children in their daily activities and growth. From doing this he developed a sequence of how a child's intellect unfolds and how thought develops at each stage from infancy through adolescence.

Developmental area of focus

Piaget was interested in the development of moral reasoning, which is how decision making and behavior relate to social values. He believed that moral reasoning occurred in stages. He developed a sequence of how a child's intellect unfolds.
