HMS Bearcat Bulletin

August 2017

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

This year we are celebrating heroes at HMS, and we're off to a great start. I see our kids learning and growing every day. I hope you enjoy the video that we put together highlighting our teachers' definitions of a hero and sharing about their personal heroes.

We have had lots going on to celebrate and a few logistics that still need to be taken care of before the year gets by us. Please enjoy the newsletter and let us know if you have any questions.

Online Registration

It is vitally important that the school has your current contact information. This year, we moved to an online system of updating that information. If you have yet to complete online registration on Infinite Campus, please do so as soon as possible. Even if your information has not changed, we need you to complete the process to verify it is correct.

If you would prefer to complete the registration on a computer rather than your phone, or are having trouble we have laptops available and you can complete it at the Middle School Office.

To complete online registration:

1. Login to Infinite Campus (call 486-3121 for your password if you don't have it or to set up your account).

2. Click on "Online Registration" in the lower left corner

3. Complete the required information

Another Tool in the Belt

Reading is a skill that is an indicator for success in all areas. At Hermann Middle School, we are proud to see students walking around with their personal reading books and stealing seconds here and there to get a few pages read. Another tool to help develop great readers, though, is to develop listening skills. Listening connects to the close reading skills students need when they dive into a new text. Find an audio book or Podcast to listen to as a family! Need a podcast recommendation? Try "Wow in the World" from NPR, "Brains On! Science" podcast for kids, or "Dream Big Podcast" to get started. (Thank you to Dr. Monica Burns from Class Tech Tips for information that contributed to this segment).

Solar Eclipse at HMS

Students and staff at HMS were excited and mesmerized by the views of the total solar eclipse. As we were viewing, students from each Bearcat Time group placed items in a time capsule and explained what they were adding. Groups added everything from painted rocks representing themselves to selfies to a 3-D printed HMS (made in our very own MakerSpace). Some pictures of items and students presenting are shared below.

Student of the Month

One of the definitions of hero that we looked at on the first day of school was "People admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities." During our Student of the Month assemblies we celebrate the heroes in our school. The students that we see being courageous, having outstanding achievements, or displaying noble qualities in everyday situations.

We also recognize that we have heroes in training at HMS, so we include a monthly lesson to help us all be more courageous and to show our superhero qualities more often. This month's lesson was called "Growing into your Greatness" shared by Mike Smith of Jostens Renaissance's "The Harbor." Mike shared that to truly be great you have to practice resistance training: (1)Resist the temptation to take it easy on yourself, (2)Resist the lure of easing up on your focus, and (3)Resist the temptation to quit after you fail. He also talked about falling in love with learning so you can practice the skills to do what you love. A kid may not be passionate about math or social studies or science, but learning in school is developing the skills and discipline needed to learn later in life.

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS or PBIS)

The work on moving toward a school-wide tool for managing student behaviors continues at HMS. In August, the PBIS Leadership Committee focused on the philosophy of PBIS practices: to teach students how to behave, and to focus on being preventative and proactive. We also began writing lessons to teach expected behaviors. Each lesson plan includes an explanation and demonstration of a behavior, chances to practice the behavior, and feedback for students.

Breakfast and Lunch Menus

Opaa! Food Management has launched a partnership with Nutrislice to publish up to the minute school menus both on the web site and on a free phone app. Access menus at http://hermann.nutrislice.com/ and/ or download the app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play store.

Cardinal Calendar Sales

HMS will be selling Cardinal's calendars again this year to help support student activities and incentives. Calendar sales will run from October 20 through November 10. Calendars are $20 and make great Christmas gifts. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top sellers.

Online Pay Option

The Gasconade County R-1 District is excited to offer online pay for parents this year! Log in to your Parent Portal, select payment, and follow the prompts.

You can pay for meals, athletic fees, chromebook insurance, and more. It is our intention that this will make it more convenient for parents to pay their child's fees. There is a $2 processing fee per transaction to cover the cost of the service.
