4th Grade, Central Elementary

News from Room 205

I hope that your holiday break was as wonderful as mine. I always look forward to spending time with family and friends. While our semester didn't end the way I had hoped, we will still have our Grinch Day on Friday, December 8th. I know the kids were just as upset about missing our fun day as I. More details are listed below.

As a precaution this week, school officials have decided that we will have indoor recess all week.

As a reminder, students are allowed to bring in a snack to have during our team time. Please be aware of what the students are bringing, I would prefer that candy not be brought in for this time. Please let me know if you have any questions.

What's Next

Reading - We will be reading Seeker of Knowledge this week. We will be looking at graphic sources (maps, charts, and time lines) to help us understand what we read. We will also be working on possessive pronouns. All reading tests will take place on Thursday. There will be a couple of changes in reading this semester. We will be adding a new station to our reading groups as students will start learning Greek and Latin roots. Another change will be in spelling. Students will need to know how to spell the word, the definition, and the part of speech. Due to this change I am no longer going to give a pretest on the spelling words. We will use this class time to practice spelling in other ways.

Spelling words for this week:

chemical – an element or compound of elements (n)

classify – to sort into categories (verb)

core – innermost part of something (noun)

ecology – study of living things and environment (n)

effect – a result (noun)

erode – to wear away (verb)

physical – related to the body (adjective)

root – part of the plant that grows underground (n)
