Lyncrest School Celebrates Lunar New Year!
On Friday, Lyncrest celebrated Lunar New Year! The students rotated through seven different activities including read alouds, the diablo (Chinese yo-yo), Chinese dance, painting and more! We culminate the day of activities with a Chinese New Year Assembly where the students present things they have learned at various grade levels. Fourth graders perform a fan dance and fifth graders share the lion dance. Each student receives a red envelope at the end of the day. Traditionally, children receive money in these envelopes, but at Lyncrest, students each receive a no homework pass! The entire day is planned by our Chinese Culture Committee and led by our Chinese teacher, Ms. Young. Happy New Year!

Did you know that National Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17th? We would like to challenge YOU to complete random acts of kindness over our winter break to celebrate at home! Lyncrest School Presents: One School, One Book!
On Friday, Lyncrest School will launch an all school book club called One School, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book – Mr. Popper’s Penguins written by Richard and Florence Atwater and is asked to read it at home during the month of February. The book will go home with the youngest child in the family. We are personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special activity. Your family’s book has been numbered as we will be collecting the books at the end of the month. Please take care of these books so that they may be used again in the future.
Your child is not expected to read this book independently, as it may not coincide with his/her reading level. Parents should read the chapters aloud to their child(ren). Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. It is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers and administrative staff – will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits.
Your child received a copy of Mr. Popper’s Penguins after a special school wide assembly, introducing the program and the book. With this letter and the book, you will find a tailored reading schedule so you can keep up at home. You will be asked to read one or two chapters each evening which is approximately 10-15 minutes per night. This year, we have included links to people reading aloud the chapter on YouTube as a support, if needed, which can be accessed from our website.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Throughout the month of February everyone will be talking about Mr. Popper and his adventures with the penguins!
Lastly, I would like to personally thank the Lyncrest PTO for sponsoring this program and allowing this wonderful reading journey to take place. This unique opportunity would not have been possible without you! The PTO purchased our books, will be providing incentives along the way to keep our students engaged, and as a culminating activity, the PTO will generously host a private viewing of the movie at the Hawthorne movie theater on March 3rd!
We look forward to talking about this great story with both you and your child during the month. “When a whole school reads a book, there is a lot to talk about.” With your help, we are truly building a community of readers at Lyncrest School.
