For the Love of Literacy

Dresden Literacy News ~ March Edition

Creating a culture of literacy in every home!

We want to help make every home a place where reading happens regularly. Where families read together. Where students grow up to be healthy, regular readers. A place where books are present and shared and talked about in the home. One way we can do this is by participating in the program One School One Book! Watch the video below to learn more about this amazing opportunity for our families!
One School, One Book Cartoon Manifesto

Announcing this year's book!

Each family will receive a copy of Kenny and the Dragon. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night. In school, your child will be invited to answer trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In your child's Schoology course there will be a March is Reading Month folder. Inside that folder will be resources for your family to enjoy the book through fun activities. We hope you will post a picture of your family enjoying Kenny & the Dragon in our Schoolwide Padlet!
Big picture

This month students have two ways to be rewarded for reading at least 400 Minutes!

1: Books & Bundt: Reading Makes Life Sweeter

This is the last month to participate in the Nothing Bundt Cakes reading program!

Each student has received a March tracking sheet to record the titles of books, chapters, or pages they have read along with the number of minutes spent reading. Remember the goal is to read 400 minutes. Now that may seem like a lot but when you break it down, it’s 100 minutes per week or 13 minutes a day. Students can count minutes spent reading our One School One Book Kenny & the Dragon!

Don't forget to turn in the tracking sheets to Mrs. Pfeifer at or students can return the sheet to their classroom teacher. Students will then get a certificate to receive a free bundlet (mini cake) from Nothing Bundt Cakes located on Hall Road.

2: United Shore Professional Baseball League Reading Program at Home

This year, our partnership with the United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) will be organized differently. Families will have the option to sign up for participation in this incentive. Families that sign up will receive emails each week in March with fun content from the League and many challenges that students can do at home.
