D103 Spring Break Travel Guidance
Hello D103 Families,
Spring is upon us and warmer weather is here! This is a follow-up letter regarding the District 103 procedures for returning to school after traveling. Please read the procedures carefully and maintain safety during your travels through spring break or any other time during the year.
In a previous e-notice dated March 1, it was mentioned that a surveillance test would be given following spring break. However, due to the type of test that would need to be administered and logistics, we decided not to administer a surveillance test. We ask that parents follow the guidelines as outlined below and have your child tested in the event you are unable to maintain the 3 W’s (wear a mask, wash your hands, watch your distance) during your travels. The CDC and Lake County Health Department guidelines for travel are also included for your information.
Thank you for your partnership as we raise our Leaders in Learning.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D
Superintendent of D103 Schools
D103 Travel Procedures
If a family has traveled, participated in risky behavior, and was unable to follow the 3 W's (wear a mask, wash your hands, watch your distance) then we ask families to:
Have your child tested for COVID-19 with an RT-PCR test. Tests are available through your personal physician or a Lake County testing site.
Do not send your child to school until you receive a negative result.
Share the results with school and your physician.
If you or your child exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms, please contact your personal physician for further instructions.
COVID-19 Travel Guidance
CDC and Lake County Health Department
You may have been exposed to COVID-19 on your travels. You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can still spread the virus to others. You and your travel companions (including children) may pose a risk to your family, friends, and community after your travel.
The CDC recommends following all state and local recommendations or requirements after travel.
Lake County Health Department Guidance
Upon return from domestic or international travel, the recommendation is to quarantine for 10-days and obtain a COVID-19 RT-PCR test 5-7 days after your return. Individuals should continue to quarantine for 10 days even if they test negative. The local health department guidance will supersede that of the CDC, which requests that travelers get tested 3-5 days after travel and quarantine for 7 days after travel. Quarantine exemptions explanation:
Individuals who previously tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered do not have to quarantine after travel ONLY IF the travel occurs within 90-days of their positive test date.
Should travel fall outside of this date, the individual should quarantine.
Ex: if an individual tested positive on January 15th, they are exempt from quarantine through April 15th ; should travel extend past the April 15 date, they should quarantine upon their return
Individuals who are fully vaccinated, i.e., two weeks after their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, do not have to quarantine after travel ONLY IF the travel occurs within 90-days from the date when they were fully vaccinated.
Ex: second dose of COVID-19 vaccine occurred on 2/15 - this individual is not fully vaccinated until 3/1/21. From 3/1/21, this individual will be exempt from quarantine until 6/1/21; should travel extend past the 6/1/21 date, they should quarantine upon their return.
International Travel
On January 12, 2021, CDC issued an order requiring all air passengers arriving to the US from a foreign country to get tested no more than 3 days before their flight departs and to provide proof of the negative result or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding the flight. This order became effective on January 26, 2021. This order applies to all air passengers, 2 years of age or older, traveling into the US, including US citizens and legal permanent residents.

If I tested negative before my flight, do I need to get another test when I get to the US?
Yes. Always follow state and local recommendations or requirements related to travel. Individuals returning from international travel should test again 5-7 days after their return date.
Domestic Travel
From the CDC: After You Travel: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19.html
Also, take these actions after you return from travel to protect others from getting COVID-19:
Avoid crowds and stay at least 6 feet/2 meters (about 2 arm lengths) from anyone who did not travel with you. It’s important to do this everywhere — both indoors and outdoors.
Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public settings. Masks are required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
If there are people in the household who did not travel with you, wear a mask and ask everyone in the household to wear masks in shared spaces inside your home for 14 days after travel. Consider staying in private bedroom and bathroom away from family members.
Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness (i.e., elderly, pregnant woman, those with chronic conditions, etc.).
Watch your health: Look for symptoms of COVID-19.
