Reflections from Elder's Desk
This past week, I attended Stages 2 and 3 of Understanding by Design (UbD) training. I learned the purpose of the backward design approach and the importance of Stages 2-3. In Stage 2, the teacher focuses on the “evidence of learning”—collection of assessments to demonstrate that students learned the standard in Stage 1. In Stage 3, the teacher designs “learning experiences and instruction” to meet learners’ needs. Students are given opportunities to apply their learning and make meaningful connections. The backward design approach supports students being able to transfer their learning through real-world experiences and assesses whether the students meet the intended goal. Moreover, it allows educators to avoid focusing on activities but what students are learning. Ultimately, all three stages must properly align to be effective.
Administratively, we are near the completion of our first round of walk-throughs. Consistently, we noticed how intentional you are in helping our students succeed. Thank you for your willingness to go out of your way to help our students do well. Before we begin our second round of walk-throughs, we will be taking a closer look at the following:
· Objectives should be visibly displayed on the screen or on the board.
· Remain in the power zone—when teaching or monitoring students, you are in close proximity to them.
· After every 10-15 MINUTES of a teacher-led discussion, provide 2-3 minutes for students to engage in purposeful communication. Students need time to process what they learn.
· Provide opportunities for students to write critically--retention significantly improves when students can communicate what they mastered.
As we examine various instructional strategies to enhance learning, I want to challenge each of you to think about an idea or strategies that you are interested in incorporating but you have not because of fear or the fear of failure. You have permission to try it or fail at it. We grow when we are stretched the most, so take that next step and employ that practice or strategy. We are Driven by Purpose at AMCHS.
