Background Checks
Otsego Public Schools thrives in part because of our many volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include classroom helpers, chaperones for field trips, boosters, and other volunteer groups. In order to volunteer, you must have an updated background check on file. Otsego will now require all individuals who volunteer to complete a background check each year; therefore, any volunteer with a background check dated prior to June 2022, will need to fill out a new form. If you are unsure if a new background check is required for you, please reach out to your child's school building or contact LeAnne Perkowski in our Administration Office (LPerkowski@otsegops.org or 269-694-7902).

Congratulations, Mrs. Sabatke!
Washington Street Elementary 1st grade teacher, Val Sabatke, has been named the 2022-23 Educator of the Year for Otsego Public Schools! She was honored on Thursday night at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Night of Recognition. Mrs. Sabatke has been teaching for 15 years; this is her 6th year at OPS. "I love teaching in Otsego because of the strong sense of community and the team effort to do what's best for students," she says. Congratulations, Mrs. Sabatke!
Spina Bifida Awareness
Navaeh, a WSE Kindergarten student with Spina Bifida, is spreading awareness of her condition with her classmates. October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Her mom read a book to the class about Spina Bifida and is also donating it to the school library so others could learn more. Navaeh's classmates all colored a yellow ribbon for SB awareness.
Thanksgiving Meals
Friendship Wesleyan Church is providing Thanksgiving meal baskets this year for families in need of encouragement or support in our local area. The meal consists of an uncooked turkey, boxed mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls and butter, canned vegetables, and a dessert. There is enough in each basket for a family of six. If you need a second basket, just let us know. You can pick up your basket on November 19th, from 12-3pm, at Friendship Wesleyan Church (1285 102nd Ave. Plainwell, MI 49080). If there is an extenuating circumstance where a basket needs to be dropped off, please reach out. If you would like to receive a meal, please email Mrs. Bender at abender@otsegops.org, or call 269-694-7826 to be added to the list.

When/Then Choices
When/then choices are an effective way to motivate your child to complete a task. The parent should direct the child to complete the desired task, and then offer the positive consequence as what will happen upon completion. For example:
Maria has trouble getting her homework done, but likes to spend time playing video games with her friends. “Maria, when you have finished your homework, then you may play video games with your friends.”
Joey has trouble getting his room cleaned, but likes to shoot baskets. “Joey, when you have your room clean, then you may go outside to shoot baskets.”
Steve doesn’t like to pick up his dirty clothes, but always wants to build with his Legos. “Steve, when you have your dirty clothes all in the hamper, then you may get out your Legos.”
Shelly argues about taking a bath each night, but loves texting with her friend. “Shelly, when you have taken your bath or shower, then you can have your phone to text with your friend.”
By phrasing the consequence positively, as a when/then choice, the options are more attractive to the child and he/she is more likely to be motivated to accomplish the task. The child does not get to do the activity he/she wants until the activity the parent wants accomplished is completed.
