Gwinnett County Public Schools is expanding its COVID-19 Surveillance Testing pilot to include students and staff in the South Gwinnett Cluster. This voluntary testing process has begun. More about the South Gwinnett Cluster COVID-19 Testing Pilot:

Routine COVID-19 testing (also called surveillance testing) can quickly detect individuals who are positive with COVID-19 and trace contacts who should quarantine. The testing, which is free and will be conducted on a weekly basis at the school, uses a short Qtip-type swab to collect a sample from inside the nose. This testing will allow GCPS to test, receive test results (within 24 hours), and notify individuals of a clin­ically significant reading. By participating, students and staff members can help to minimize the spread of the virus within our schools, which benefits us all.

Although participation in surveillance testing is not required for students or staff members, it is strongly encouraged. Participation will contribute to the success of this mitigation strategy and our schools’ ability to limit the spread of COVID and keep students learning in person.

The Grace Snell Middle School Cooking Club received a generous $5,000.00 Empowerment Grant on Thursday, February 10, 2022. The grant was sponsored by Walton Electric Trust, a Customer-Owned Electric Power company. The GSMS Cooking Club is very excited. This grant will allow many students to learn the basics of cooking and baking.


Our next Cooking Club meeting will be on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at 4:30PM.

Congratulations to our Comet Scholars who participated in the County Science Fair last week! Best of luck as these students wait to hear if they will be competing on the state level. Thank you to Ms. Demmons and Mr. Grassman for their hard work making this possible.

CELL PHONE POLICY

Starting January 12, students are expected to have their cell phones and earpods out of sight. This includes during class instruction, cafeteria, hallway, and dismissal.


This change is due to an increase of irresponsible usage. If you need to reach your student throughout the school day please contact the front office at (770) 554-7750.


During this device moratorium, we ask you talk to your child about positive digital citizenship.

Vaccination Clinics This Month

The latest Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) report on community transmission indicates "High" transmission of COVID-19 in Gwinnett County. As a result, masks are required in all GCPS facilities. Masks also are required on buses in compliance with federal mandates.

Under the school district’s current COVID-19 protocols, community transmission levels must be maintained at the "Moderate" or "Low" level for two consecutive weeks before district mask guidance transitions to “Strongly Recommended.”

GCPS encourages our community to learn more about COVID-19 vaccinations and take advantage of opportunities to get vaccinated. In an ongoing partnership with the Gwinnett Health Department and other health partners, GCPS continues to host vaccination clinics at high schools around the county during the month of February. No appointment is necessary. The following locations will be hosting vaccination clinics this month:

  • South Gwinnett High School, 3 p.m.-6 p.m.
    Thurs., Feb. 10, 2022 [ages 5 and older]
  • Archer High School, 3 p.m.-8 p.m.
    Tues., Feb. 15, 2022 [ages 5 and older]
  • Brookwood High School, 3 p.m.-8 p.m.
    Thurs., Feb. 24, 2022 [ages 5 and older]
  • Dacula High School, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC)

Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC)

For the 2022-23 school year, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will offer a digital learning option for students in grades K-12 through Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC), opening GOC’s program to K-3 students for the first time. Digital students at all grade levels will enroll full-time at GOC rather than being enrolled at their local neighborhood/zoned school.

Gwinnett Online Campus registration will be held February 1-28, 2022, for students who wish to learn digitally in the 2022-23 school year. Visit the school’s website (https://www.gcpsk12.org/domain/7748) for more on the GOC registration process. Registration during this timeframe will allow the school to staff appropriately to serve students next school year.

Families can learn more about Gwinnett Online Campus and digital learning next school year through GOC information sessions.

  • Virtual information sessions are scheduled for Monday, February 7, at noon, and Monday, February 14, at 4 p.m. These sessions will be recorded and will be available on the school’s website for viewing later.
  • In-person information sessions are scheduled for the following dates/times:
  • Thursday, February 3 at 10 a.m.
  • Wednesday, February 9 at 10 a.m.
  • Tuesday, February 15 at 10 a.m.
  • Tuesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 23 at 10 a.m.

GOC offers a flexible learning environment, extensive support from teachers and counselors, individualized instruction, and a full range of courses. The school offers special education, ESOL, and gifted services. GOC students must meet all promotion and graduation requirements. Gwinnett Online Campus is the school district’s full-time, diploma-granting school for grades K-12. While GOC classes are digital, students are required to participate in some face-to-face meetings to take part in hands-on labs, interactive learning labs, and testing. Transportation is not provided for in-person sessions. Gwinnett Online Campus accepts students in grades K-12 who reside within the Gwinnett County Public Schools attendance zone. The student’s custodial parent(s) or guardian(s) also must reside within the GCPS district.

Academic Assistance Program

We are pleased to announce that Grace Snell Middle School will be hosting the Academic Assistance Program (AAP) again this year. AAP is a credit recovery program for students who failed first semester courses. This is our way to offer students another opportunity to meet promotion requirements. Please note that to earn promotion to the next grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed. According to the first semester report card, your child has been identified as not meeting promotion requirements. Therefore, he/she will be required to attend the Academic Assistance Program.

This program will provide six (6) weeks of instruction aligned to first semester curriculum standards. Those who successfully demonstrate mastery of the curriculum standards will earn a passing grade (70) for the course. Attached you will find our 2022 AAP application. Please complete the application and send it in with your child or drop it off at the front desk. The cost is $75 per course which can be paid using the MyPaymentsPlus app or online. Please refer to the application attached for additional information.

Tutor.com is a free way to receive homework help online.


4 EASY STEPS


1) Simply open a web browser and search www.gwinnettpl.org. You will then see the blue “Find It” tab located at the top of the screen.

2) This link will lead you to an overview page when you will see a green button labeled “Access Tutor.com”

3) Click the button, then enter your library account number or your child’s GCPS student ID for the username, and the four-digit number of your child's birth month and day as the password. If you enter the information correctly, you will be granted immediate access to the resources of Tutor.com.

4) Students can submit a paper or a math problem to professional tutors who will review the material and respond with feedback within 24 hours. Tutors are available between the hours of noon and 8pm for live assistance. With expert help in 40 subject areas, including AP courses, kindergarten, through the last year of high school, students receive homework help whenever they need it.

Protecting Your Child's Mental Health

Your mental well-being is as important as your physical health.


Being a kid or teen isn’t easy. There are personal, social, and school pressures every day.


Handling these changes can be hard. Kids and teens who are also dealing with mental illness are more likely to have a tough time and may even have thoughts of taking their own lives. How can you support friends and your child in such a crisis?

FIRST, it’s important to take all thoughts of harming oneself seriously.

WARNING SIGNS that a person is thinking about suicide:


  • Talking about suicide, death, or “going away”
  • Giving away personal items
  • Talking about feeling hopeless, sad, or depressed
  • Staying away from friends, family, activities
  • Having trouble thinking clearly
  • Changes in eating or sleeping habits
  • Engaging in risky behavior (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, cutting themselves)


How can you help?


Listen. Show that you understand what they are going through.

Ask if they have a plan. Be open and honest.

Don’t ask why. Thoughts of harming oneself may be confusing to the person thinking them. Questions about why may upset them. They could get defensive.

Stay with them. If you feel they might harm themselves, do not leave them alone. Get help. Always call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

Take action. Keep any firearms, drugs, or other means of suicide out of their way.

Get help NOW. Getting emotional support from a counselor or therapist can help teens stay healthy and safe. You can also call the numbers below for additional help.

Intramurals are Here

Intramurals run in both the fall and spring. We typically offer basketball, volleyball, and soccer, but these are always subject to change.


INTRAMURAL RULES

1. Intramurals are open to all students.

2. Intramurals will be held Monday - Thursday.

*Monday Mornings– 6th grade 7:45- 8:55

* Tuesday Mornings 7th - Grade 7:45- 8:55

* Wednesday - 8th Grade 7:45- 8:45 am afternoon 4:00-5:30

* Thursday – 8th Grade 7:45- 8:45 am afternoon 4:00-5:30

3. The student must be dropped off in the car rider lane no earlier than 7:50 a.m.

4. All participants must exhibit good sportsmanship and the established school rules.

5. Students are responsible for securing all their own personal valuables. It is strongly recommended that each student bring a lock to secure their valuables in a locker. Thank you for taking the time to read our guidelines.

Medication Reminder

Students are not permitted to transport medication to school. If you would like for your child to take any medication during school, including Advil, Tylenol or prescription medication, you must provide the medication to the school clinic worker and complete the appropriate paperwork. Parents must bring and pick up all medication for students. If your child needs an inhaler, please contact the clinic directly for directions.

WATER BOTTLES

PARENTS: Please make sure your student brings a water bottle to school everyday! While the water fountains are still on, we do have a water bottle refill machine in the cafeteria and across from the cafeteria for all to use. Only clear liquids are allowed.

Digital Learners

Digital learners who attend GOC may pick up meals in the front office Monday -Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Each day's pick-up includes both breakfast and lunch.

Grace Snell Middle School's Community Garden

Grace Snell Middle School's Community Garden "Where we Plant Seeds to Grow Minds and Food." The Community Garden will be a staple for our school and the community. We will use the garden as a teaching resource for our STEM curriculum, all content levels and beyond. Our goal is to have a thriving educational garden that can provide fresh organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs to the community.

Need a place to give new, outgrown or lightly worn clothing? Consider sending it to school for the Health Center. Items in Adult XS -L can help children maintain their school dress code requirements.

Items can be added to the collections box near the Parent Center. All items will be collected by PTSA member frequently until Tuesday October 19th, 2021.

RISING 7TH GRADE IMMUNIZATIONS

By state law, a valid certificate of immunization (Form #3231) or a notarized statement of religious exemption (Form #2208) is required for enrollment. The certificate of immunization must be completed by the health department or your private physician. A valid Form #3231 must be marked with either "Date of Expiration" or as "Complete for School Attendance." (A certificate marked with a "Date of Expiration" expires on the date indicated. A current certificate must be submitted within 30 days of expiration.)

Please review immunization requirements for students and a TDAP-Meningitis parent fact sheet for students entering 7th grade. The new vaccine requirements apply to students who are born on or after 1/1/2002 AND entering 7th grade. The requirements also apply to students who are new entrants to 8th-12th grade. New entrants are students who have never attended any school in Georgia or have not attended any school in Georgia for at least one full school year.

If I Make Up My Missing Assignments, What Could My New Grade Be?

The My StudentVUE App and the ParentVUE App now has the ability for students to gauge their semester average based on the score they'd like to earn on a missing assignment. This is a very nice feature because it does the calculating for you.

The Student Data Validation/Change Process is online via the ParentVue Update Student Information tab within the Parent Portal. To ensure receipt of all school information updates, it is important that all information is reviewed and updated annually. Please use this feature to ensure all necessary contact information (i.e., emergency contacts, pick up lists, cell phone numbers, doctor numbers, and any necessary medical information the school needs to know) is up-to-date and accurate.


The information provided here is our primary emergency contact information, and it is crucial that we get accurate parent/guardian telephone numbers and addresses.
