The Kennedy Book Fair

This week is the Kennedy Book Fair. Students can come in at brunch and lunch to browse and purchase books. Many of the classes will visit as well. This year on Thursday, October 10, the Book Fair will be open from 7:00-8:00 pm in the library (following the High School Fair).

If you are able to help with the Book Fair, please sign up using this link:

Principal's Coffee This Thursday

I made a mistake and this week is actually a Principal’s Coffee from 8:30-9:30 am in the library. (We didn’t hold it last week like we typically do the first Thursday of the month because of the district-wide early dismissal day). We will learn about the assessments students recently took or will take: MDTP, History Social Studies Test, and the IAB’s. As always there will be time for open forum and we will tour seventh grade and elective classes. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday! The Superintendent’s Coffee will be Tuesday, November 5, from 8:30-9:30 am in the library.

Fermi Challenge

This past Thursday, Kennedy participated in a Fermi Challenge with their second period class since it was short day. A Fermi Challenge is a question that allows you to figure out an estimation based on data to answer that question. It allows to you to make a prediction of what you think the answer may be before you do calculations and use your data and research to figure out the answer.

Students built balloon powered rockets out of straws, string, balloons, and masking tape. The question they had to investigate, answer, and present was: How long will it take for your balloon powered rocket to travel the radius of the earth?

Below are some resources used from our day, including a student-friendly video and article that provided some extra learning about the first person in outer space. Thank you to 6th Grade Science Teacher, Kelly Jorgensen, and Technology Coach, Kathryn Marinos, for putting this all together. Also below are some pictures.

No School Monday

Reminder: There is no school on Monday, October 14, due to Columbus Day.

Extra Time On Assignments

Last week we rolled out a new policy that if students attend Breakfast Club or after school academic help they can have some extra time on short-term assignments. Students can turn in an assignment up to five days late from the original due date without penalty. (They must have a stamp from the staff member providing help and have signed in on our designated computer to an academic support session).

This policy that we are piloting will provide students some cushion if they truly need help on an assignment and it takes a couple of times to complete the assignment with help. (We are seeing in the mornings at Breakfast Club students mostly need math support and sometimes it takes more than one session to get an assignment complete since it takes time to learn and practice concepts). This new policy also provides some relief when students have too much homework in one night and/or a lot of after school activities and can't get the work done without staying up really late.

Teen Talk

Several parents have asked to learn more about the Teen Talk curriculum. 7th grade will begin Teen Talk later in October, so we will have an informational night on Tuesday, October 8, from 6:30-7:30 pm in the library. A presenter from the program will be there to show you the curriculum, answer questions, etc. Thank you to Mrs. Figueroa for helping to arrange this for us. She will also be present that evening. Please see the flier below.

High School Fair

Thursday, October 10, is our annual High School Fair organized by Liz Calderon, Kennedy Community School Coordinator, from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Kennedy gym. Come meet representatives from the local high schools (public, charter, and private) and some of the other programs offered on these campuses. Anyone from RCSD can attend. Spread the word.

WEB Carnival

Save the date for the 6th grade WEB Carnival that will take place after school on Friday, October 25, from 3:15-4:15 pm. The WEB Leaders will be planning and leading the booths for the sixth graders. Permission slips will be sent home on Tuesday.
