Teaching and Learning Corner (with Ms. Snyder)
Instructional Look For:
- Teacher Radar: Know when scholar are off task
- Deliberately scan the room for on-task behavior:
- Choose 3-4 “hot spots” to scan constantly
- “Be Seen Looking”: crane your neck to appear to be seeing all corners of the room
- Circulate the room with purpose (break the plane):
- Move among the desks and around the perimeter
- Stand at the corners: identify 3 spots on the perimeter of the room to which you can circulate to stand and monitor scholar work
- Move away from the scholars who’s speaking to monitor the whole room
Standards-Based Grading:
Gradebook Tracker Reminder: Your gradebooks have been updated with the interim reports. The first 6 (5-8) or 8 (k-4) tabs are where you input grades. The additional tabs are auto-populating grade reports. You can peak, but please DO NOT enter any data in those tabs.
Parent Communication: Friday you need to reach out to any parent whose scholar has less than a 70% in the HOS tracker in any category. I recommend having a standard message you send to each parent through your communication app.
Interim Reports: All grades must be up-to-date by Sept. 23rd. We are sending home interims on Sept. 25th. You should have at least 3 standards graded by Sept. 23rd.
CULTURE AND CLIMATE CORNER (with Mrs. Douglas)
This Week's Global Greatness Look Fors:
SILENT HALLWAY TRANSITIONS:
Hallway transitions are an area of grow. At this point in the year, we should still be "sweating the small stuff." Scholars and staff are expected to be silent when traveling throughout the halls. Scholars should practice silent transitions if they don't get them right the first time. As a best practice, to better manage lines when walking in the halls, teachers should 1) assign line leaders check points so that they know where to stop throughout their travels 2) position themselves in the middle of the line, rather than walk at the front, with our backs to the scholars. Teachers and staff are encouraged to model the desired behaviors by using non-verbals and quiet redirections, when necessary.
UNPACKING RESPONSIBILITY: Because our Jewel of the Month for September is our first Global Greatness expectation, this month we will focus on unpacking responsibility. In your morning meetings, iLead and Restorative Circle time, please come up with discussions and activities that your scholars can do to begin understanding what responsibility means.
HAPPY HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH!
Dismissal Reminders!
Thank you to everyone who has been adhering to the new process for dismissal. Please make note of the following updates:
1) TIMELINESS: It is imperative that team members make their way to post. Non-classroom teachers who are bus monitors should retrieve your binders and be in the gym by 3:20p each day.
2) BUS AND AFTERCARE: Teachers and staff who are assigned to a bus or aftercare are expected to remain with the scholars until 3:45p. Please do not just drop scholars off to the gym or cafeteria and then leave. Dismissal is a team effort that requires the support of all team members.
3) PHONE USE: Please hold scholars to the same expectations when it comes to cellphone usage. Scholars waiting on buses or aftercare are not permitted to play on phones while in the building. If they need to call a parent, they can be permitted to do so, but otherwise should have phones away and out of their hands.
