Second Grade "Beary" Good News

Highlights from Second Grade

Beginning next week our LRC day to check out books is Friday. We will be checking out 2 books each week. Library books should be returned by the following Friday. However, if students have finished reading them and have taken an AR quiz on both books, they can go to the library and get two new books any day. Beginning second quarter, we will not have a regular check out time. Students can get new books as needed.

We have started our launch into SchoolWide Reading Fundamentals, our reading curriculum. In this unit we are going to learn what it means to be a part of a reading community. In our reading workshops we will designate a special time and place to read every day and learn skills and strategies that will help us become better readers. For example, students will learn how to make connections between what they are reading and their own personal lives.

In our Narrative unit of writing, we will capture story ideas and begin to stretch out small moments. In this week's Friday Folder is a District Newsletter about this type of writing . It provides an overview of the goals for this unit, along with a writing checklist that students and teachers will use to assess writing. A second grade writing sample is also included.

We are starting our Measurement and Data unit using rulers, yard sticks, meter sticks, and tape measures. We will be using standard and metric measurements. Look in the Friday folder for a letter about XtraMath, a program designed to increase speed and accuracy in mastering basic math facts. It's a timed practice program with the goal of students recalling each fact within three seconds.

Star Student

Our first presentation for Star Student will be Wednesday. Blake was selected at random to begin. We are anxious to hear all about Blake.
