Summer School Registration Information
Gilbert Public Schools Community,
For the 2018 GPS Secondary Summer School Session we will be changing the registration procedures.
In previous years, registration was done through Community Education and their online system. This year we are moving registration to work within Infinite Campus, using InTouch. Moving to Infinite Campus has allowed us to work with the school counselors to create a system in which Summer School recommendations come directly from your child’s counselor.
This year, in order to register for a summer school course, a request will need to be placed with your child’s counselor. That counselor will then suggest the course in Infinite Campus and place the course fee suggestion in the Parent Portal for our InTouch payment system.
Parents will receive an email that the course has been suggested and that they can then find it under the Highland High School (location of 2018 summer school) tab in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to pay for it. Once payment is received, the student will be registered for the course and a confirmation email will be sent.
Registration opens March 21st, however, students can visit their counselor and request classes prior to that date. Payment and registration cannot be completed until March 21st.
For more information please visit our webpage: Summer School Information
If you have any questions about the Secondary Summer School process please email us: summerschool@gilbertschools.net
If you have any questions on what class is best to take for your child this summer, please contact your child’s school counselor.

WIND ENSEMBLE, SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, AND COPPER JAZZ PERFORM IN NYC!
Over a year’s worth of planning, fundraising, organizing, and practicing went into the recent trip the Campo Verde Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Copper Jazz Band took to the Big Apple. The students, directors, and chaperones had an amazing time and the students represented our high school with the spirit only a true Coyote could.
The students and chaperones left Arizona early Tuesday morning, March 27th and flew directly to Liberty Airport in Newark, NJ. From there, they were bussed to their hotel in the heart of New York City. Stunned by the vertical landscape the city has to offer, the students and their assigned chaperones took in a little bit of the night life before heading off to bed. An incredible amount of diverse activities awaiting their stay in this fast-paced metropolis. Excursions included the following amazing sites:
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, both symbols of our Country’s immigration process. The students got to tour Liberty Island and take pictures with Lady Liberty herself. They also could see the great hall and processing rooms on Ellis Island – no doubt some of the student’s ancestors made their way through those very halls.
9/11 Memorial and Museum – even though some of our students were only babies while others were not even born when the tragic events of 9/11 unfolded, the emotional and solemn nature of the memorial pools built into the footprints of the towers and the artifacts of the museum showing the timeline of the events on that fateful day were something they will never forget.
Hello Dolly Broadway Show and Ellen’s Stardust Diner – The students watched the Broadway show, Hello Dolly, at the Schubert Theater, starring Bernadette Peters. Many were surprised at how much they enjoyed the show and might even have sparked an interest in the dramatic arts. They also attended a dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner with a singing waitstaff which was enjoyed by everyone.
Metropolitan Museum of Art – The Orchestra students visited one of the world’s largest and finest art museums. Its collection includes more than two million works of art spanning five thousand years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe. Students had the chance to see works from Van Gogh, Degas, Monet and many other famous artists.
Other sites visited during their free time (depending on how adventurous the sub groups were) included Central Park, the John Lennon Memorial - Strawberry Fields, Times Square, Penn Station, Museum of Natural History, Empire State Building, Chinatown, Little Italy, Brooklyn Bridge, City Tour, NBC Studios, Rockefeller Center, etc. Many took to the shopping districts off 5th Avenue, 34th Street, and around Times Square to buy their souvenirs. They also became experts in New York’s underground subway system with the help of their chaperones. By the end of the trip, some students even claimed a love for this very different “Big Apple” lifestyle.
On Thursday afternoon, March 29th, The Copper Jazz Band had the extreme honor to attend a workshop at the Lincoln Center with Nick Finzer, a Julliard-trained award-winning composer, arranger, and Jazz trombonist. It was truly a great experience for all those students.
On Friday night, March 30th, after a morning rehearsal at DiMenna Center for Classical Music, the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra performed at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall, where the acoustics were unparalleled and only highlighted their extraordinary music. They were both rewarded with standing ovations.
We would like to thank the amazing directors, Matt Kozacek and Crystal Payne, the incredible chaperones, the parents who made the journey to watch their children perform, the Booster organizations for their fundraising, and the presence of Principal, Mr. De La Torre, and his wife and for his strong support of the fine arts programs at Campo Verde High School. It truly was a trip of a lifetime for these students!

Library Information:
We finished another successful year of the Library’s March Madness and the winner is...Scythe by Neal Shusterman. Thank you to all the students that came in and voted.

Chromebook Information:
Chromebooks need to be charged daily. A good rule of thumb for students is to charge the Chromebook at night. Plug it in before bed and it will be all charged in the morning. Also, remember that the library has charging stations available to students during lunch. If a student notices that the battery is getting low, he/she can charge it during lunch to get through the rest of the school day.
If a student’s Chromebook is dead or forgotten, the student will be sent by his/her teacher to the library for a loaner Chromebook for the day. This helps the student get through the school day, however, after three instances of this, they will receive a disciplinary referral.
Seniors:
Make sure to check in the library that all library books are returned and fees are paid before graduation. Also, you will be turning in your Chromebooks and chargers to the library after finals, so make sure they are in good shape before you turn them in. These Chromebooks will be used next year for other students so make sure any stickers are off before you return it. A sticker on the Chromebook is considered intentional damage and has an associated fee.
