Message from Principal Polomsky
Elmwood Parents & Community~
It is difficult to believe that we are already half way through the month of October! We had another great week at Elmwood and we are so proud of all of our students and the way that they build community here.
We have several teachers that we are celebrating this weekend.
Our 5th grade team and Learning Support Coach are heading down to Illinois State University for the State Those Who Excel Awards! They are representing our entire district in the Team Category. Congratulations to:
Lynn Henz, Sarah Stock, Melissa Stines, Josh McLeod, McKenna Lulic, and Damary Cortes!
Also, this Sunday is the Naperville Education Foundation 5K and Half Marathon. We have several staff members running. Good luck to: Andria Baumgartner, Janet Park, Marlene Espinoza, Jessica Alltop, and Emma Oliver!
As always, we look forward to ‘Making a Difference’ with you this school year!

Rock Climbing PE Schedule
Our first session of rock climbing will be starting the week of October 29 for our 4th and 5th graders. Our 3rd graders will climb with the 4th and 5th grade the week of November 5th. Please check our climbing schedule and sign up to volunteer at any time. Training for any parent volunteers will be provided before each session begins. Rock climbing teaches our students the value of effective communication through teamwork as well as providing physical benefits. Special thanks to Val Goldstein our scheduling coordinator for her assistance during our adventure education programs. The volunteer schedule will be out very soon. We hope to see you soon. Thanks, Mr. Howard and Ms. Westlove ~Elmwood PE Teachers
Donate Small Toys to Elmwood
Every Friday we invite our selected winning S.O.A.R. students to pick a treat from our treasure box in the lunchroom. As you can imagine, this is the highlight of the week for many kids as they reach into the box and get to take home a tangible item (i.e. coloring book, chalk, squishy ball, fun pencils/pens etc.). THANK YOU to the many parents who have already made a donation! We will accept donations all year so keep them coming!! Remember... "One's trash is another one's treasure!" :) Thanks in advance for your donation!
Winter Wear & Halloween Drive
We are still collecting winter apparel and Halloween costumes for our students within the Elmwood community. We are collecting snow pants, coats, hats, mittens, boots, scarves & Halloween costumes (bins are located in the front lobby). If you have any of these items laying around your home, please drop them off at Elmwood. Thanks in advance for opening your hearts to others in need! *If your child is in need of any of these items mentioned, please call our office #630-420-6341.

It's time to order yearbooks! You can order one now by clicking HERE. Take advantage of great offers by ordering online - 10% off through October! Questions? Please contact elmwoodyearbook18.19@gmail.com
Halloween at Elmwood
Halloween will be celebrated at Elmwood on Wednesday, October 31st. Our annual parade will begin at 1:15 PM and all parents are invited to attend. Weather permitting, students will exit out Door 17 while taking two laps around the track. If weather is poor the parade will be indoors and viewing will take place in the multipurpose room and Gym.
Halloween Costumes
- K – 5th graders should bring their costumes to school in a bag and change at lunchtime.
- Children are allowed to wear appropriate Halloween masks. However, masks should be appropriate for all elementary school children. Please avoid sending students with masks that have “fake” blood or masks that will impair their vision.
- No weapon replicas are permitted at school at any time.
- Children may participate in the parade in regular school dress.
Halloween Pictures
All pictures of ‘other’ children should be sent to the yearbook committee and shouldn’t be shared via Facebook or other forms of social media. elmwoodeagles@gmail.com
Dismissal on Halloween
Parents, please REFRAIN from pulling your kids early (2:25 PM) from the Halloween party. Although 5-minutes does not sound like a big deal…. It indeed creates confusion for students and staff as room parents walk around to pull their children and/or even their neighbor children from multiple classrooms prior to dismissal. PLEASE wait until the final 2:30 PM bell to take children home. IF you absolutely have to take your own child home early, parents will need to sign children out at the front office and this is highly discouraged.
Halloween Parade Participation
Everyone is welcome to participate in the parade. If you wish your child to not participate, they can go to the Learning Center during this time. Please notify their teacher/s by email of their desired plan. Activities will be available for their enjoyment.
Rake ‘n Run
Do you or any of your neighbors need a helping hand due to a new baby, advanced age or health problems? The Elmwood Elementary School Family Partnership Committee (SFCP) is hosting a Rake ‘n Run event on Saturday, November 10, 2018. If you or any of your neighbors need their front yard as part of a free community service project, please call the Elmwood School office at 630-420-6341 or email ElmwoodSFCP@gmail.com. Please contact us by Friday, October 25th, so that we may allow enough time to assemble volunteers. We will then be at your house between 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th, weather permitting, to rake your lawn! We are also looking for volunteers to rake on Saturday, November 10. If you are available and and willing to lend a helping hand, please email us at ElmwoodSFCP@gmail.com. This is a great event to get the whole family involved and help teach kids about being a caring community! We will have coffee, juice and bagels/donuts afterward in the Elmwood garden to reward you for your hard work! Can’t make the event but still want to help out? We’d love for some baked goods to be donated for the hard-working volunteers. Please email us as well if you would be willing to donate an item. If you have any questions please email. Libby Traeger and Jessica McGuire SFCP committee co-chairs
ColorCyle
Elmwood is going to participate in a very special program with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy! All around Elmwood students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located around the school for your child to deposit the markers. Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!
