OTMS Band update
May 2, 2016
THE END IS NEAR!
As we head into our last 3 weeks of school, there are some important details to know about our final events!
Thank you WoF volunteers!
I realized the other day that I never really said an official "thank you" to all of the wonderful chaperones who helped make the day at Worlds of Fun possible! So, THANK YOU!! Without your help, keeping all of those kiddos corraled all day long would NOT have been possible!
Playing Tests--due last Friday!
The kids had another round of music playing tests due last week, but there are still several students who need to finish them and get them submitted. This time, we used their chromebooks to make videos of their tests, which they then sent to me by submitting the link through this Google Form. The kids can still get these completed and turned in, but it needs to be done as soon as possible! All directions are in Google classroom.
Solo & Ensemble--this Saturday!
I sent home detailed info today with those kids who are participating. You can also click here for a copy. Important highlights include:
- Kids should dress up for their performance.
- It is okay for parents to drive their own kids to and from this event, since they are mainly individual events. I just need it in writing (email is fine) if that is what you plan to do.
- For those riding the bus, we'll meet at OTMS at 11:30 am and return around 3:30 pm.
May 9 is the FPUES Band concert
7 pm in the HS Varsity Gym
Fine Arts Night--May 12
Our final concert of the year, OTMS Fine Arts Night, is coming up soon! The concert is May 12 in the PAC and starts at 6:30 with the OTMS choirs. The bands will perform next, starting around 7:15. The students will need to arrive in time to start our warm-up no later than 6:45. Concert attire is the same as it has been all year: band polos, black dress pants or skirt, dress shoes and socks (if necessary).
Last day for instruments = May 12; School-owned instruments = return by May 13
ALL kiddos should take home personally-owned instruments and binders after the concert and keep them at home over the summer. All school-owned instruments (including mouthpieces and any accessories) need to be returned to school by May 13th. (I must get these checked in and prepared to be sent off for summer cleaning and repairs.) To make things easy, the kids can bring those school instruments to the concert on May 12 and leave them in the HS band room. I'll be able to get them back to OTMS the next morning.
8th grade Mixer & parent meeting--May 13
All 8th graders who will be continuing in band next year are invited to come to a Mixer with the high school band on Friday May 13th at the high school. This gives the kids a chance to get to know some of their future bandmates, learn about the marching show for next fall, eat pizza and play games, and just generally have a good time! There will also be a very important announcement made which Mrs. Gregory would like to have all the parents also hear, all at the same time. Please make plans to attend the parents meeting at 6 pm that evening, in the high school band room. If you have any questions about the mixer or parent meeting, please contact Mrs. Gregory at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Boot Camp--August 8-12
The Band Staff is excited to be offering Band Boot Camp again this August! This event is for the students who will be in 7th and 8th grade band during the 2016-17 school year. Boot Camp will be Aug 8-12 (the week before school starts) in the evenings at OTMS. The purpose is to get the kids back into band mode--we'll play music and games, get to know each other all over again, and start getting geared up for the new school year! The entire Fort Osage Band staff will be helping out to get the kids off to a good start. We'll also able to check over horns to make sure there are no last-minute repairs needed. The week will finish out with a short, low-stress performance from both the Boot Campers and the High School's Red and White Brigade, and an ice cream social! In order to thoroughly plan for this completely free event, however, we need to know the kids' T-shirt size and how many people to plan for at the ice cream social. We need all registrations completed by May 20th. Click here for more Boot Camp info.
I am putting together the obligation list for band. An "obligation" is the Fort Osage term for "something given to you or loaned to you by the school district that you need to return or pay for". So, kids who have borrowed polo shirts or unpaid fundraiser money or Worlds of Fun ticket money will have a band obligation (until it is taken care of). I will be giving the kids an individual "Notice of Obligation" paper so that they can bring that home and get that cleared up before the end of the year. Otherwise, the obligation will follow them into 8th or 9th grade.
