Founders of New Jersey
James Duke of York
This man held the land of New Jersey (given to him by his brother, Charles II). Very soon after he was given the land, he handed it to two of his friends.

Lord Berkeley was one of James Duke of York's friends who was given the colony of New Jersey and credited the founder.

Original Settlements of New Jersey
Made by the Dutch
The first settlements of New Jersey were made by the Dutch along the western bank of the Hudson. These settlements are considered insignificant and the history of the colony properly begins with the occupation of the land by english colonists.
