Magnet

Magnets in our lives are very interesting. Magnets usually have a North pole and a South pole. Magnets have some invisible area around them that is called the magnetic field. The magnetic field of force around a magnet attracts iron, cobalt, nickel and steel, just because they are magnetic metals.
All metals have magnetic domains. These domains are all jumbled up. The poles for magnets have two stations, the North pole and South pole. Two magnets attract when their poles are different, for example, North pole and South pole attract. ‘Attract’ means they go together. Two magnets repel when their poles are the same, like North pole and North pole. ‘Repel’ means the two magnets push away.
The earth is actually a big ball of magnet which has magnetic field around it, and it also has a North and South pole. That is why the compass needle always points at North because the compass must be a South magnet.
In some fridges there is a small magnet on the door. This is how you can open it and close. Our school has doors which use electromagnetism. If you push the red button on the wall, it breaks the current and the doors on the two sides close. The doors are normally open and attached to the wall by small iron plates. Electricity goes through the iron plates which makes them magnetic. The two plates attract each other and keep the doors open. When there is a fire alarm, the doors close automatically, because the circuit is broken by the alarm. Without electricity, the iron plates are no more “magnets,” so they don’t attract any more. So this is how the door opens. Some buildings maybe have electromagnetic locks. They may have a red or green button that you can push. The button gives the door a sign and the door opens the same way as the fire alarm doors.
Magnets can do lots of things, like attach to your locker to make decorations, or make your own DIY magnetic bookmarks.
As you can see magnets for us are very important. We use them in so many ways! We are lucky we got magnets in our life.
