This past week the 7x12 students watched the documentary "Priced Out" about gentrification of the Albina neighborhood. Students then spent 45 minutes asking Cornelius Swart (producer/director) questions. I was so impressed with our students both in their behavior and in the thoughtful questions they asked. Severals students were inspired to research housing and rental laws and look into ways they might take action with the housing crisis in Portland.
Lots to look forward to this week. Our Kx2 will be having their 100-Day celebration on Monday. We have the 4x6 circus coming to MLC on Friday afternoon as a culmination of their circus storyline. Additionally, we have Kx3 vision and hearing screening on Tuesday.
Don't forget about the MLC Auction tonight starting at 6:00pm at Congregation Beth Israel 1972 NW Flanders. I can't wait to see everyone there!

March 14th Events Honoring Safe Schools
On Wednesday, March 14, at 10:00 am MLC will be participating in National School Walkout intended to honor the 17 people who lost their lives at school in Florida. Kx5 will be participating in a Sing Along for Safe Schools. This event will be held on the steps leading down to Couch Park. KX5, will gather on the brick steps leading down to the playground for the sing along, led by 4X5 student teacher, Daniel. We will NOT be talking with our elementary children about school shootings, lost lives or gun control. Although we are honoring those who have died, our participation in this event will focus on the idea that community, working, playing, and singing together, and truly including one another makes our school a safe and happy place to be. Please join us if you're able.
The songs the Kx5 classes will be singing are listed below.
- If I Had a Hammer
- This Land is Your Land
- We Shall Overcome
- Peace Like a River
Our 6x12 students have been organizing their own student-led events. At 10:00, they have planned to surround the school and hold hands. The activity will symbolize us "holding our school safe in our arms".
Students are also planning to gather on the blacktop to:
- remember the individuals who lost their lives/moment of silence
- student speeches, poetry (school safety, gun control perspectives, etc.)
- learn how to contact policy makers
- learn about what happens when the school receives a threat
- hold signage to support safe schools around the perimeter of the building
Teachers will be in classes for students who do not wish to participate. Parents are welcome.
