Technology and Innovation News with Mrs. Freeman
It’s been a great month in the Innovation Lab! Students are working really hard on our growth mindset projects and innovative designer projects! Thanks to everyone who has sent in supplies!
In Early Childhood we have worked on building letters, shapes, and patterns!
Kindergarten students have started to learn about what makes a good engineer and how to have an open mindset.
First Grade worked on our teamwork by completing an apple tower challenge and we have started working on our maze projects. We have talked about what makes a good maze and designed mazes for our coding mice. We will continue to work on mazes by designing and building lego mazes and marble mazes.
Second grade students completed a pretest on our programming unit. We will be jumping into vocabulary and start working on how to debug programs.
Third Grade students learned how to make a stop motion animation using Google Slides.
Fourth grade students are busy trying to develop a zombie apocalypse escape plan. We are programming our sphero robots to get quickly through the city so we can survive!
Fifth grade students in Mrs. Hensley’s class have completed the main construction on our tiny houses and we are currently designing furniture to scale using a CAD program that will be printed out on the 3D printer.
Sixth grade Engineering and Design students have completed several projects and are earning lots of badges!
Supplies for the Innovation Lab
We use all kinds of supplies in the Innovation Lab. Please see this flyer for our most used items. If you have items around your house that you would like to send, I have a collection bin outside my room, students can drop it off on their way into school. Thanks for supporting our learning!

Maple Library Happenings with Mrs. Cline
Maple Library is loving all of our readers this month! Student have the opportunity to celebrate each book that they finish- whether it be from our library, the public library, home or their classrooms- by adding a star to our bulletin board in the hall. I am so happy to say that our board is full already! Maple students are definitely reading! Families can help at home by encouraging your child to spend 20 minutes a day reading, and be great reading role models.
This month students have learned more about book care expectations, heard more our yearly reading incentives and celebration in March 2023, and celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with titles about influential authors, artists and leaders, especially those who helped to create libraries and share stories of their culture.
In October, Maple Library will once again host our Pumpkin Character Contest. Students who wish to participate can find all the contest information here. We will accept pumpkins the week of October 17th- October 21st. Voting will take place on the 24th and 25th, and families are invited in during Parent Teacher Conferences to see all the great creations and take pumpkins home. Winners will be announced on October 31st. First place will win a $15 Book Fair Voucher. Second place will win a $10 Voucher for the Book Fair, which will be here in November!
I will be hosting a MES Crochet Club starting on Friday, October 14th at 7:30am in the library for any interested 4th, 5th or 6th grade students. Please have your student come find out more information from me if they want to learn how to crochet or help teach others. If you have extra yarn or crochet hooks that you’d like to donate for student use, we’d greatly appreciate that too!
Music with Mr. Kroeger
If your 4th-6th grade student is interested in choir and you still need to sign up, please follow this link below to get them signed up for our first after school rehearsal on October 10th.
Additionally we have had an exciting first quarter star student contest in the younger grades. We have several classes that are near the top of our star student leaderboard. If your student is in Mrs. Henshaw's first grade class give them a high five for being our current school wide leaders. Remember, a star student does an excellent job in music class, shows character outside of school, and helps other students succeed daily. Have a wonderful October and as always feel free to reach out if you have any questions about your student's music education!
Art News with Mrs. Haddock
Fifth Grade students are doing well with trimesters this year. This allows them to spend more time on projects. They have many Studios open. They choose drawing, painting, or collage. They have already started clay, and we will try printmaking next week.
Sixth Grade Art has quarter long classes. This first class completely focused on 3D art. They have created clay projects, cardboard sculptures, fiber sculptures, etc. There are only a few classes left in the quarter. We will also set up an art show during their class time. We will set up on the stage and families of students are welcome to come October 19th at 2:00.
PE with Coach Anderson
Our K-2 students have been learning about different activities that they may have seen out at recess or one that they may have interest in. During PE, they were allowed to collaborate and come up with different activities they wanted to try during our class time.
The older students (3-6) were introduced to new activities that we will be providing this year at recess. During this time, students were able to recite certain rules and procedures that came along with the activities that were being played.
At the end of this unit, students were able to recognize different activities and what came along with those certain activities (rules, teams, equipment used, etc.) My goal for this was to have students excited to try new things at recess with new groups. I wanted them to have enough confidence to join an activity that is being played by a group that they are unfamiliar with. This allows everyone to engage with each other and make new friends.
