Hello from the principal's desk!

Hello Ruby Stars!
I hope you had a wonderful March! Realizing I didn’t send out a single weekly newsletter in March… did anyone notice we went a little silent? I sent out Remind messages about events, but didn’t write up a Star. My bad! I will try and do better this month.
We did have some awesome events in March starting with the Golden Sneaker, where we try to get kids and families to Walk, Roll or Carpool to school. It was tough though, as it was SO rainy! Big ups to Andrew LaBarre’s class who again brought home to trophy. We also loved Heritage Night, which was incredibly well attended. The potluck was delicious, the traditional clothing was amazing and the performance by the Filipino Dance and Music group (family from our TK class) was a perfect addition. Thanks also to the first graders and third graders who did Heritage projects to display in the MPR! Big thanks to Ms. Estioko, Mr. Lundholm and especially Ms. Noor for helping me get the event all set up and organized all night.
We also just got done with our annual Science Camp trip! Special thanks to the fifth grade teachers and chaperones who went on the three day, two night trip to make sure everyone had a safe and fun time. I am sure there were many memorable events on the trip. Check out the @RubyBridgesPTA Instagram, Twitter or Facebook feed to see some awesome pictures. To our 4th grade families, get ready… you are up next!
There are TWO important surveys that I need you to take – one, to find out your overall satisfaction with our school (surveys.wested.org/csps/MM622DZ) and another from Safe Routes to Schools (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8TJWK5F). You can visit our webpage for the links, or look for them in the online version of The Star I will be sending out. Please take them, they will only take a minute of your time!
We start our annual, end of year state testing for students in 3rd – 5th grade next week! Check out http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html for some practice questions so you can see what our students need to be able to do to be proficient on these exams!
All for now.

Trait of the month - SELF CONTROL
Not to have control over the senses is like sailing on a rudderless ship, bound to break into pieces on coming in contact with the very first rock.

CAASPP testing
Important announcement for families of students in 3rd – 5th grade for end of year CAASPP (California Academic Assessment of Student Progress and Performance) test
The California Education Code Section 60615 states that parents/guardians may annually submit a written request to the principal of their student's school if they do not wish to have their student take any or all state tests. If a parent or guardian submits an exemption request after testing has begun, any test(s) completed before the request is submitted will be scored and the results reported to the parent or guardian and included in the pupil’s records. AUSD teachers and schools support students to do well on the tests and help them learn test-taking skills that will enable them to be successful throughout their school career and beyond. We encourage parents to contact their child's teacher or principal with any concerns they may have about the test before they request that their student be excluded from taking the test(s).
