The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
One week left in first semester!!! WOW! Here we go! I always describe second semester as a roller coaster. We spent the first semester click, click, click climbing the hill of the roller coaster in anticipation of the fast and exhilarating down hill- well second semester is almost here and the speed is picking up! Please make sure that you are advocating if you need any assistance. Please make sure you are finishing strong and that you make sure over the winter break you are taking care of yourself.
I also want to thank all that have reached out regarding the 2023-2024 school year bell schedule change. This is a great shift that we are very excited about. We are switching to a 4x4 block schedule because research has shown that the 4x4 block schedule has the potential to increase graduation rates and test scores. Research also indicates that the block schedule structure generally results in lower workloads for both students and teachers. Since students are enrolled in fewer courses during a given time period, the number of assignments that need to be completed is generally lower in the block schedule, often positively affecting students' mental health. The extended period of time also allows for positive relationship building within the classroom setting. OHS will also be adding an advisory/homeroom to the schedule that will focus on the Pirate Core Values, College and Career Readiness, Social Emotional Health and Wellbeing, and other valuable life lessons. More information to come!

OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
Pirates win Maranatha Tourney for second time
The Oceanside girls basketball team made "slight work" of their opponents at the Maranatha Christian School basketball tournament last week.
The Pirates tore through pool play and then played rude guests as they defeated host Maranatha 48-35 in the finals Saturday night. This is the second consecutive year that OHS has won the tournament.
Against Maranatha, Oceanside trailed 16-11 at halftime, but exploded with a 18-4 third quarter en route to the 48-35 victory. Alivia Gillespie led the Pirates, who improved to 5-0 on the season, with 24 points and Nevaeh Mageo added 17.
OHS opened three days of pool play with a 76-19 thrashing of Castle Park. Mageo (20 points) and Gillespie (17 points) led the way, while Emily Para had nine points on three 3-pointers. Maddie Gates and Aubrey Madden each scored seven points.
O'side shines at Student-Athlete Conference
Five OHS student athletes participated in the first North County Conference Leadership Conference Thursday at the Oceanside Elks Lodge.
The student athletes spent the day with others from the 22 NCC schools talking about sportsmanship and leadership and how they can incorporate those ideas into their respective schools and teams. This breakthrough event was in accordance with the state CIF's recommendation that sportsmanship be a top priority for all involved in high school sports.
The conference was led by OHS’ Lia Nance, who is the conference representative on the CIF student-athlete advisory board. Nance plays golf, water polo, and softball for the Pirates. Joining Nance were Taylor Armstrong (water polo, softball), Nalia Nuanez (basketball, softball), Julian Amador(football) and David Porotesano (football). Armstrong also filmed at Public Service Announcement about sportsmanship that will be shown to the students next month.
