North Star College
at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
We are beginning week five of classes and I'm sure you're recognizing that students are starting to feel the reality of some of their college courses. These are college classes and there is some heavy lifting needed each week by students to complete assignments/projects and to be prepared for exams. If you are experiencing challenging conversations at home and seeing some anxiety and stress levels on the rise remember to: encourage the use of UAF resources (see below), help prioritize assignments, open up Canvas together and take a look at grades, continue to check in throughout the week with them, etc.
Many of our students are experiencing academic challenges like they've never faced before. That's ok! They will make it even if it's not always that A+ performance they may be used to.

Graduation Communication with Area-Attendance Schools by Oct. 1
As a reminder students graduating this 23-24 school year may choose to walk with their area attendance school, as well. It's time to make that decision and have your student in communication with their area-attendance school if they choose to do so.
The student/family are responsible to contact their school to get their name on the list, get information about deadlines (ordering caps and gowns, etc) and to obtain additional information about any other senior activities as the year progresses.
We will keep you informed here of NSC graduation information, ordering caps/gowns, etc. as the year progresses.
Come pick up your books!
We have been getting shipments in of those books that the bookstore hadn't stocked or professors hadn't submitted their orders to the bookstore. Please stop by our office and pick them up. We have the Political Science, Spanish, Pre-Calculus, Intermediate Algebra, Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab Manuals, Writing 111, World Literature, Ancient Civilizations, testing scantrons and blue books, etc.
PSAT--Registration deadlines quickly approaching
SAT and ACT Testing Dates on UAF Campus
Is your student needing to take the SAT or ACT this year? The SAT and ACT are qualifiers for the Alaska Performance Scholarship and many colleges/universities require one or both of these test scores for their admission applications.
UAF Exam Services administers the SAT and ACT tests several times during the academic year. Space is limited so be sure your student registers early. Registrations for these exams typically close 30 days prior to the exam date. Students can find registration deadlines and test information HERE.
Partners with FNSBSD--Thank You!
Many wonderful businesses, community organizations, and individuals give financial and in-kind donations to school in support of students. We're happy to share that those who Partner with FNSBSD will be recognized on the district website, on the district's social media, and at school board meetings. Your support of students matters and we want to say THANK YOU!
FNSBSD Free and Reduced Meals and Application
Qualifying students are welcome to walk through daily to our NSC office space and pick up the bagged breakfast/lunch combo option, as needed. Parents, please make sure that you've filled out the application, if needed, so we have accurate student records for this current school year.
Disability Student Services at UAF
Does your student experience a disability and related barriers in academics or accessing campus? Your student may register with Disability Services (DS) and request accommodations to address those barriers.
1.) Fill out and submit the Registration Form. The Registration form covers a broad range of information. Some things may apply to you, the student, and some things may not, don't get hung up on any one question. You may skip any of the questions you feel do not apply to you. There are no right or wrong answers.
2.) Provide documentation from a medical provider stating your disability, diagnosis, and/or symptoms you experience. Alternatively, your provider may complete the Disability Verification Form. If you have any questions about medical documentation and how to access it, please let them know.
At the conclusion of the initial appointment a letter will be drafted and emailed to your student for your student to share with their instructors as needed. Please note that your student is responsible for contacting Disability Services to renew your letter every semester.
