Grace Before Meals - words from Fr. Leo Patalinghug
This is my commandment: Love one another as I love you. No one has greater love that this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:12-13
Question.....are you thinking that this Remembrance Day we get an additional day for fall break? Taking the time to consider the cost of freedom and the bravery of those who are called to military service is not a political statement. Remembrance Day honours those who were willing to leave behind their comforts so that others might be helped.
This Remembrance Day take some time to make sure that your children understand the human cost of the freedoms they know. Your observance need not feel like a funeral - far from it. This is a time to savour what has been secured for you.
Begin with a prayer. Perhaps attend the services here in Sherwood Park. (http://www.strathcona.ca/departments/recreation-parks-and-culture/special-events/remembrance/) . Watch the televised events and observe the minute of silence at 11:00am or consider attending our school assembly on Thursday November 10th beginning at 9:00 am. Which ever way you chose to observe Remembrance Day, you are modelling the love and respect of others who have bought us our personal freedoms.
Let's Talk
Which freedoms do you most appreciate?
What do you consider worth defending, even worth dying for?

From our school Peace Officer
G’day to all Parents, Teachers and Friends of Madonna and Mills Haven Elementary,
I wanted to introduce myself to all the new families in our schools. My name is Jason and I am the dedicated Peace Officer that patrols the Main Boulevard roadway. You may often see me or my vehicle in the school zones and I welcome you all to come up and say “G’day”.
Now that we are back to school and settled in I wanted to take a moment and remind all drivers of some of the more common violations that I address:
1. Stopped in a “No Stopping” zone (including bus zones)
2. Parked in a “No Parking – Student Drop Off zone”
3. Parked within 1.5 meters of a driveway.
4. Illegal U-Turns (in school zones)
5. Failing to obey a traffic control device.
Fines for these violations range from $57 to $233.
If you have a family member, friend or Carer who regularly pick up/drop off your child(ren), I would recommend that you get them to familiarise themselves with their respective schools drop-off locations, prescribed times and penalties that could be applied. Lastly, if you are using the teachers parking for drop off or pick up of students then this behaviour needs to stop as well as children are not expected to be in these areas.
Drive Safe, Be Safe and Enjoy.
Officer Jason

What Parents need to know about the new curriculum...............
Competencies - The Who, What, When, Where and Why
(https://education.alberta.ca/media/3272989/competencies-faqs-for-parents-sept-6.pdf)
Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 provincial curriculum is designed to engage students in exploring, developing and applying competencies in relevant subject content and contexts. As part of curriculum development, there will be a shift from an implicit to an explicit focus on competencies. It is important that parents learn about competencies, and how parents can work together with their child's teachers/schools to support the development of competencies, both now and in the future.
ERLC, in partnership with the Alberta School Council Association, has created an informative, two-part webinar series to help parents learn about competencies, and how they can support the development of competencies.
We encourage you to register for one of these free sessions in order to learn more about the upcoming changes to your child's learning. Both a morning (9:30am-10:30am) or an evening (8:30-9:30pm) session is available.

The school’s Fundraising Committee will be holding its’ Annual Parent Conference Bake Sale to be held in the evening during parent conference on Tuesday, November 8th and Wednesday November 9th .
We are asking families to donate 1 -2 dozen treats to be sold at the bake sale. These treats can be cookies, squares or any other yummy baked goods you like to bake. And for those who do not like to bake…we are not picky, purchased baking will also do!! (Please remember the baking needs to be nut free.) We ask that all baking be brought to school or dropped off at the school kitchen on Monday, November 7th anytime throughout the day and the morning of Tuesday, November 8th . Please make sure that any storage containers are clearly labeled with your child’s name and grade so they can be returned after the sale. (Or stop by to pick it up)
Volunteers are needed to set up for the bake sale, man the tables during the sale and take everything down and back to the kitchen at the end of the evening.
