The Ritenour Review
2016 - 2017 Third Grade Weekly News
IREAD
It's over!! Woohoo!! The kids did an amazing job with persevering through another round of testing. Their resiliency amazes me daily!
Last Week
- Reading: We finished up our character studies unit. The kids have grown immensely in this unit and I love how much they connect with their books and the characters now.
- Math: We are navigating the waters with fractions again. This is a tricky concept. It needs to be very visual at this level and we are trying to get out hands on as many objects to practice this concept. They are turning the corner with visualizing fractions without objects; however, we will keep those manipulatives around for a but longer.
- Social Studies: Cupcake Economics! We had a fun activity with cupcakes this past week. I dispersed random amounts of fake dollar bills to the class. I showed the class my ONE cupcake and auctioned off the the highest bidder. Astoundingly, Cooper offered $52 for the one MINI cupcake! The rest of the class was pretty bummed. To their surprise, I brought out entire tray of cupcakes and decided to auction off those remaining 24 cupcakes. The class was quick to offer $1 or less for each cupcake this round. Needless to say, Cooper wasn't thrilled to know he spent his entire amount on the same size cupcake that was now being sold for a fraction of his price. In the end, the class had a great discussion on Supply and Demand.
Next Week
Language Arts: We are moving in our fourth unit: Research Clubs! I will be using animal non-fiction texts to model for the class. The students will be working in Book Clubs and will be researching a type of plant. After spring break, each club will find another type/classification of plants and compare the two topics.
Math: Fractions and Volume
Word Study: Our multiple groups are up and running. Your child should be bringing home a written sort completed in class. This is expected to be their study material for home.
Social Studies and Science: Our economics unit was short but definitely sweet. We will finalize the unit and move into Plants! Just in time for the first day of Spring!
Happy Birthday, Cooper!
