A note from Dr. Church

Dear Totem Falls Parents,

It has been a busy week as remote classrooms have been working on routines and expectations and we added five classes of in-person instruction. Next Wednesday we will welcome Mrs. Hurtado and Mrs. Bonner’s classrooms back to school.

As with our younger students, we will be asking third through sixth grade students to begin lining up outside their classroom doors. The covered area has been a great gathering spot to have students gather for us to check attestation and meet their teachers to start the day. Our older students are familiar with the campus and we are confident they will find their way to their teacher’s door. All classrooms have been working to reinforce the morning expectation and we will continue to have supervision in front and on the sides of the school to help anyone with questions.

I want to thank everyone for your attention to the attestation process in the morning. I know it is another thing to add to your busy morning, but so helpful here. Students, on the whole, are quickly starting the day with their teacher in class because of your integrating this new routine.

I also want you to know we are continually looking at our processes here to see what we can improve. Drop off and pick up is something we can see becoming more efficient at with your help. Please watch this video for some things to consider. The main ideas for you to incorporate into your drive are:

  • Creating a sign with your child’s last name on it to help identify your vehicle (materials coming home for that)
  • Having your child get in the car from the passenger side. You might need to adjust car seats. We have had some safety concerns with students walking into the line of traffic.
  • We are trying to have students get into vehicles when pulling up between the two blue cones noted in the video.
  • Be careful when pulling away from the curb. There have been a couple of near misses. I’m reminded of Sea-tac drop off every afternoon! 😊

  • Parents need to be wearing masks and staying on the parking lot side of the planter in the front

Have a great weekend. As always, reach out with any questions.

A note about Transportation

For any questions or changes to your bussing, please contact the Transportation department at 360-563-3525.

Water Bottles

Please have your student bring a labelled water bottle to school each day they are in-person. Our drinking fountains are closed but they can fill them at the sinks in their classrooms. If your child forgets their water bottle at home, there are single-use paper cups in the classrooms the student can get from the teacher.

Snohomish School District Coronavirus Testing Research Study

The Snohomish School District and the University of Washington (UW) are excited to announce the launch of the Snohomish School District Coronavirus Testing Research Study. This study and testing for the virus that causes COVID-19 is available for kindergarten through 2nd grade students participating in in-person instruction in our schools.

This testing program is available beginning Monday, February 22, and those eligible can sign up anytime between now and Wednesday, March 31.

Enrolled participants will receive convenient, weekly coronavirus testing where they will be able to swab themselves or their child in the comfort of their own homes and drop it off at school on the same day. Children may also be able to be swabbed while at school. The UW’s nasal swabs are less invasive and easier to use than other coronavirus tests, only going about one inch into the nose. For more information, please visit www.sno.wednet.edu/reopening/testingstudy.

The Snohomish School District and the University of Washington (UW) are excited to announce the launch of the Snohomish School District Coronavirus Testing Research Study available to kindergarten through 2nd grade students participating in in-person learning. This testing program will be available beginning Monday, February 22.

Through the study, students will be offered an easy, weekly coronavirus test. The program is powered by the Seattle Flu Study team, the group that first reported community spread of COVID-19 in the United States.

Families with students enrolled in the study can choose to collect the child's swabs at home and drop it into the drop box during morning drop-off or choose to have a trained researcher collect swabs from their child while at school. For more information, please visit the district website at www.sno.wednet.edu/reopening/testingstudy.

How it works

  • Qualified students include kindergarten through 2nd grade students participating in in-person learning.
  • If you are a parent/guardian of a qualifying student and are interested in having your child participate, you can enroll online beginning Monday, February 22 to fill out a consent form and 15-minute enrollment questionnaire.
  • Participation is completely voluntary, and you can choose to have your child leave the study at any time if you change your mind after signing up.
  • You can choose one of two options for your child’s weekly swab:
    • Option 1: Collect your child's swabs at home and drop it into the drop box located at school during morning drop-off. You must be able and willing to bring your child’s swab to campus once per week.
    • Option 2: A trained researcher can collect the swab from your child while they are at school.
  • If you choose to collect your child’s swab at home, you will receive a kit containing everything you will need to swab your child for the study after you sign up. The research team will bring these kits to your school once you sign up. Your child will bring the kits home.
  • If you indicate that your child is feeling sick on a scheduled swab day, a swab kit will be mailed to your home.
  • You can look up results for each of your child’s weekly tests online within 48 to 72 hours of being tested.

The study runs through Friday, June 18.
