PfISD Updates
Dear PfISD Parents & Guardians,
We started our second 9-weeks grading period last week, and we heard from many parents, teachers and administrators about how well our new-to-campus students did in adjusting. Pickup and drop-off had some longer wait times, but for the most part our campuses all did well in responding to an increased number of students on campus. I’m proud of the efforts by our staff and our parents for working together to make it a successful start to our next phase. Of course, our online learners continue to do great work and we will continue to passionately serve their educational needs as well.
I wanted to take a moment to reflect on how wonderful our Pflugerville community is. At the PfISD Board meeting last week, our Trustees voted to name our next elementary school Jessica Carpenter Elementary School. Jessica was a special education teacher for 20 years and spent the last 15 years with PfISD. I think that, first, that speaks volumes to the impact she had on her students in PfISD. Secondly, it shows how much our community cares about those who make a difference in their lives. Jessica battled cancer for the last four years before her passing a few weeks ago. At the Board meeting, her husband was very thankful for the outpouring of support of her nomination and spoke beautifully about Jessica and what this means to their family.
I also want to recognize our Board of Trustees for being named one of the top school boards in the state by Texas Association of School Administrators. During our last meeting, I presented our Board with a plaque as the Region 13 Honor Board. TASA recognized our Board as the top school board in our region, which represents 57 school districts in the Central Texas Area.
COVID Communications & Text Messages
I wanted to remind everyone of how we are notifying our community members when we have positive cases of COVID-19 reported to us. When we are notified of a positive case, whether it is a student or staff member, we immediately begin our contact tracing. Our process for quarantine and contact tracing follow CDC guidelines and protocols. If the lab-confirmed positive member of our community is on campus, they are immediately isolated until picked up or until they can drive themselves home. We utilize seating charts in classes and interviews with staff during contact tracing to determine if the positive individual has been closer than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes to any other person. Anyone who has been closer than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes, even with a mask, is considered a direct contact. Upon completion of contact tracing, we immediately send a communication in the form of an email, phone call, and text message to the parents of students who are direct contacts, notifying them that they will need to quarantine for 14 days from the last interaction with the confirmed case. We recently updated the language of the text message and automated voice call to let you know your child needs to quarantine and to check your email for more details. For staff members, the principal will speak with them directly.
Shortly after the direct contacts are notified of their need to quarantine, we send a letter to all parents and staff, reporting that a positive case has been confirmed on their campus. So, the students and/or staff who must quarantine are notified first and as quickly as possible. Then, we notify the entire campus that a positive case has been reported. Any student or staff member who must quarantine will receive a text, phone call and email first.
Because we are utilizing an automated messaging system, it is imperative that parents make sure they have selected to opt in for the option of receiving SMS messages from the district. We encourage all parents to check their contact information in Skyward to make sure the first or second phone number listed in parent contact information is a cell phone number that can receive text messages. We know this may not be an option for every one of our families, but if you have the ability to receive text messages on a cell phone, we highly recommend it.
In order to receive text messages from the district, you must indicate your willingness to receive text messages to your phone. The process is simple and only takes a few seconds to complete.
Simply text any one of the following words to the number 68453: subscribe, opt-in, yes. You will know you were successful if you receive the following reply message:
“You are registered to receive approx 3 msgs/mo. Txt STOP to quit, HELP for help.”
You’ll want to repeat the opt-in process for all wireless numbers that you wish to include.
Please note, only legal guardians whose contact information is currently tied to a student in the district’s student information system can opt-in to the text message system. If your number is not tied to a student in our district, the system will not accept your opt-in request for these notifications.
We also want to make sure our parents have current email addresses on file. Please check your email addresses in the Skyward system. If the District currently has an email address you no longer use in the system, please update it and contact the campus registrar to ensure it gets updated.
During these times, we want to make sure our parents and guardians are receiving the information they need regarding positive cases and/or quarantine notices.
Gifted & Talented Nomination Window Open
Our Gifted & Talented program is currently accepting referrals. Parents or staff members may nominate a student for consideration in the program by 3 p.m. on Oct. 30. After a student is referred or nominated, they will participate in the screening process for possible identification
Online forms for each campus are available on the GT program’s website and linked below. Referrals that come in after the Oct. 30 deadline will be held and those students will be screened during the next available GT testing window.
Don’t hesitate to nominate your gifted learners! Link: Gifted & Talented Referral Info & FAQs
Don’t forget that this Friday, October 23 is a student holiday. There will be no school on Friday while our teachers and staff have a staff development day.
Fall is here, although it might not feel like it every day, and that means we are in our final grading period of the first semester. Before we know it the holidays will be here. I encourage everyone to approach this last period before winter break with enthusiasm and work together to overcome any challenges our students or staff may face.
Together we are strong. Together we are a Pfamily. Together we can do anything.
In the best interest of children,
Dr. Douglas Killian
PfISD Superintendent of Schools
“You are registered to receive approx 3 msgs/mo. Txt STOP to quit, HELP for help.”
