Notes from the Principaws #5 (Dec)
Mr. Vince Sette and Mrs. Nicole McQuate
The Start of December and End of 2022
As we approach the holiday season we want to express say THANK YOU to everyone for such a wonderful year thus far. We are so blessed to be working with the students, families, and staff that we have at Norwayne Elementary.
The office is currently open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm at the elementary.
We continue to have our different grade-level concerts throughout the year. Please refer to the letter from Mrs. Brown that was sent home to parents about our concerts during the school year.
Mrs. Brown's Letter for NES Concerts
Parents, please return all school forms ASAP. These are essential to ensure we have the most up-to-date information for your child. Thank you for your continued support in filling these forms out for us.
Norwayne Elementary LITERACY Spotlight
Literacy is an integral part of a student's success in school. Please reach out to the administration or teachers with any questions in regard to literacy at Norwayne Elementary.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER WITH MRS. MONTE
November was a great month for emotional skills with the Bobcats. We focused on managing our feelings and our 4th graders also learned about how to stay true to themselves.
Throughout November, my door was decorated with a new career poster each day. This was to inspire our students to begin thinking about the job that they would like to have in the future. The posters included the type of education and skills needed for that job as well.
Talk to your students about the jobs that they would like to have one day! Depending on the age, this could lead to talking about what they will need to learn to get that job.
In December, we will continue focusing on identifying and managing feelings. Our 4th and 5th graders will be focusing on friendship skills and empathy.
Here are the focus areas for each grade level:
Kindergarten:
Identifying feelings using these 3 clues: 1. Face 2. Body 3. What is going on?
Making Helpful Choices at School
Expressing Feelings
First Grade:
Noticing how our body feels during different emotions
Feeling Frustrated
Noticing Clues to how others feel using these 3 clues: 1. Face 2. Body 3. What is going on?
Second Grade:
Feeling Proud
Feeling Disappointed
Third Grade:
Levels of Happiness using the vocabulary: content, happy, excited
Strength of Feelings
Coping Skills
Fourth Grade:
Different Perspectives/Point of View
Fifth Grade:
Friendship Boundaries
I often post highlights from our lessons on my counselor's corner site. You can also check there for ways to reinforce what we are learning at home.

If your child is going to eat a school lunch regularly, we encourage you to send in money for lunches weekly or monthly. Please put your money in an envelope with the student's name and teacher on it or use the online payment system to add money to their account.
Please note that there is now only a $10.00 charge limit in the lunchroom. Norwayne Local Schools have enrolled in https://www.payforit.net/. This service provides parents with a secure, fast, and convenient way to view and manage student lunch activities. Parents can sign up for low-balance notifications, can view students' balances, and deposit money into their children's meal accounts. Note there is a transaction fee for online student deposits. Parents can also send payments to school with their children. Please make checks payable to Norwayne Elementary School.

DECEMBER STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Ms. McDermott
- This is my second year teaching Special Education here at Norwayne.
- I love working in an atmosphere with such supportive and positive staff and teachers. I am thankful for all of the opportunities I have had to learn and grow while being here at Norwayne. I love that I have a job where I can make an impact on children every day by interacting with them, encouraging them, and growing their love for learning.
One time a student snuck into my room at the end of the day before dismissal, jumped out with a huge smile on his face, and scared me. I almost fell out of my chair and the student couldn't stop laughing for five minutes straight.
- Through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
Mr. Williams
- This is my second year teaching 3rd Grade ELA here in Norwayne
- First of all, I love my team members and all of the people that I get to work with. I also love getting to connect with all of my students and get to learn about them. It makes me so happy to see the positivity and excitement that the kids come to school with each and every day.
- I'd have to say the Spirit Days always bring a smile to my face. I enjoy the way that Mrs. Hare and I get all dressed up and seeing the reaction from all of the kids.
- Don't be afraid of making a mistake, we all do it! Just be sure to learn from the mistakes that you do make.
Ms. Eggeman
- I started at Norwayne Elementary in 2014.
I love hearing my students groan when we have to pause in the middle of a great chapter in our read-aloud book and they beg to hear more! I love matching students to books and seeing students who don't consider themselves "readers" discover a series or genre that sparks a new interest in reading for them.
- Last school year my second graders thought I was inside the Pete the Cat costume at the RUTL assembly--even telling Pete so afterward! I told students earlier in the day that I had a meeting that afternoon, so they thought I had tricked them ... but I truly attended a meeting!
- Be kind and work hard.
VOLUNTEER UPDATES @ NES
We wanted to share some new information with everyone in regard to volunteers at NES. The district has recently moved to a new background check system (SecureVolunteer, a BIB product) for any and all volunteers in the building. For those of you who frequently visit the NES website, you may have noticed there is a new tab that can be found labeled "Volunteer". I have also linked the tab directly below. By clicking the link you will find information on the volunteer process which will answer many frequently asked questions. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
We realize this is a new process for everyone which is why we are slowly rolling this out. Our expectation would be full implementation by February 1, 2023. This is yet another way we can continue working together in order to provide a safe environment for our students. Thank you so much for your partnership. We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
Norwayne Local School Volunteering Website
VOLUNTEER PROCESS
The Norwayne School Board believes one of the greatest resources available may be found in the citizens of the community who have special knowledge and talents to contribute to the District. The use of citizens as volunteers within the school program enhances the educational process not only for students but for the community as well. Volunteers may provide additional support in the classroom, promote community-school cooperation in facilitating the learning process and provide for individuals who have expertise in various areas to be used as resource persons. While we are continually grateful for this support, we are also aware of the potential concerns that can arise when volunteers are working directly with students. The District notifies current and prospective volunteers who have or will have unsupervised access to children on a regular basis that a criminal records check may be conducted at any time. Norwayne Local Schools prioritizes safety for our students and has established a new volunteer process that includes a background check.
What is required?
A background check through the district’s online system will be required of all school volunteers.
How long does it take to process a background check?
Volunteers should apply for the check at least one week prior to an event.
What activities require a background check?
While this is not an exhaustive list, here are some examples that do or do not require a background check:
Background Check Required
Chaperoning a field trip
Providing learning support for a classroom
PTO volunteer work
Volunteering for a classroom celebration at school
Assisting in school during the instructional day
How much does a background check cost?
At this time, Norwayne Local Schools will be covering the cost of the required background checks for volunteers.
How long is a background check effective?
Background checks are good for three years. You will receive an email 30 days prior to expiration informing you that a new background check is needed.
***Norwayne Local Schools utilizes SecureVolunteer, a BIB (Background Investigation Bureau) product, for our background checks. Click the bar below to be taken to the SecureVolunteer website.
