From Erin Green - Statement on Supplemental Resources
We want to provide guidance and clarity as you select and use supplemental resources in your teaching:
If it is truly supplemental (e.g. you use this in addition to the district-provided curriculum; it adds to the lessons/ skills and doesn’t take away or replace anything district-provided) -use at teacher discretion. Some examples of this would be adding a hands-on lab with leaves that you found online to your life science unit, using a poem you found on Reading AZ while teaching about the War of 1812, taking an idea from Pinterest and making sight word BINGO for a center, etc.
If it is supplanting (e.g. being used every day, being used your building grade level team and/or building-wide, it replaces or competes with some component of our District- wide curriculum, or if you’re not sure)- you need District approval prior to purchasing/ using. Start this approval process with your building principal. Some examples of this would be downloading and teaching daily a completely different sight word list while not teaching Fry words, buying a unit on how to teach fractions from TPT and replacing the corresponding chapters in the Go Math book, deciding to stop using small groups to teach guided reading/literature circles and instead using a whole class approach to teaching reading, buying a cool opinion unit packet with corresponding slides and not teaching Lucy, etc.
Following these guidelines will help to ensure that:
We know where perceived holes are in the curriculum and can look to address them systematically
We can fairly evaluate the quality and purpose of the potential purchase
We can keep consistency across the district and buildings with usage
The purchase will be paid for by curriculum, if it is something that will be used across the District
If you have questions, please reach out to your building principal or Erin. Our goal is not to limit your or diminish the art and craft of your teaching. Instead, it is to ensure we don’t take steps backwards to a time when each building was independent and there wasn’t consistency across the District.
From Vicki Turner...
THIS IS FOR ALL STAFF…All PCs will be updated to Windows 10 starting March. Please review this document. You will be receiving an email from Vicki how to prepare for this. All icons will need to be removed from your desktop. There will be more follow-up before they come do this.
Family First Night
The district's annual Family First Night will take place on Monday, March 4. The intent of this night is for families to spend quality time together in the evening (making dinner, holding a game night, watching a movie, engaging in family activities, etc.). There should be no homework assigned this night, no tests given on Tuesday 3/5 , and no District after school activities scheduled. *This is however the first night of One School/One Book - Since we are asking families to read together, it shouldn't conflict with the concept of Family First Night.
Early Release - March 22nd
During our upcoming Early Release Day on March 22, building TBT coaches will be talking with you about the first three Filters for Quality Assessments. After the discussion, you will be working with you vertical alignment team to apply your learning to review teacher created assessments using those filters.
