Message From Principal Engdall

Big picture

Greetings Shaw Montessori,

It was so good to see so many of you at Observation Night this week. A few things of note, post event. If your child is moving to a new level, you may share your request for next year’s teacher with your child’s current teacher. Please know that while we value your thoughts, your request does not guarantee placement. There are numerous factors that staff and administration consider when creating new class groupings: learning levels, learning style, particular learning needs or accommodations, and relations—positive and challenging are just a few ways we seek to create balanced classrooms. As always, thank you for entrusting us with your child and their education. We will do our best to continue to provide the very best Montessori learning environments for them.

It is no secret that the pandemic changed many things, one phenomena is “The Great Resignation” that we are currently experiencing. Shaw, as a microcosm, will also experience staff changes that we have not seen in our past. As soon as I am fully aware of all of those changes, I will let you know.

In May, once class lists have been created, if your child is moving to a new level next year, they will participate in our Shadow Day. Shadow Day is when they get to visit their new classroom for the day. It should make for lively conversation at the dinner table that evening!

Wishing you the very best,

Principal Engdall

Spring State Testing

Every April, our 3rd to 8th grade students are required to take the state assessments. This year's assessments will be AzSCI (Science) for 5th and 8th grade students only and AASA (Writing, Reading, and Math) for all 3rd to 8th grade students. These standardized tests provide a snapshot of how students place on grade level standards. For information about the tests, including access to the online sample tests please click the following link: https://www.azed.gov/assessment/aasa

The testing calendar has been provided in this issue of SSS. Your child's teacher will also be reaching out to you prior to testing. To prepare for testing, we recommend students get a good night's rest, have a healthy breakfast, as well as bring headphones, snacks, and water. Please reach out to Jennifer Collier jennifer.collier@phxschools.org or your child's teacher with any questions you may have.

Important note: students must submit the test on the same day they start the test. Please do not plan doctor's appointments or early pick-ups on the day of your child's scheduled test.

Big picture
Per District guidelines student headphones may not be Bluetooth enabled for testing. Corded headphones only for the state assessments. Thank you!

2021-2022 Yearbook

Big picture

8th-grade Parents,

Yearbook is right around the corner! For the 8th grade pages I need:

  1. At least 1 baby photo of your child
  2. Photos (as many as you can send!) of your child throughout the years. The number of pages dedicated to our 8th graders directly depends on the number of photos sent in.

DEADLINE to send is March 31st. To ensure yearbooks are printed in time for the end of the school year I need to send to the printer by the first week of April.

Photos can be emailed to patricia.karnes@pesd1.org / if you are sending large batches you can also send me an invite via google drive. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Thank you!

Ms. Patti

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

We started our curriculum block on the chicken. The students learned about the history of the chicken, its uses, and how the domestic chicken has evolved over the millennia. The students also learned some important distinctions between a rooster and a hen. These physical differences are called SEXUAL DIMORPHISMS. See if your children can recall other examples in the animal kingdom.

The rooster has been doing his job and fertilizing our eggs. We have two incubators on site: one in Leinbach’s class and one in Craig’s class. These chicks will hatch in 21 days. Chicks will be sold for classroom money. If you are interested in purchasing any chicks then please speak with these classroom teachers. Another incubator is on its way. We will let some other classes incubate at the end of April after these current clutches have hatched.

Bugs visited again this week! The students really love him. He loves making his rounds and getting his good boi pets and treats. Thanks everyone for being a good friend to Bugsy!

The remaining 16 trees are scheduled for March 30th. The students will plant with Trees Matter personnel and APS volunteers. Some City of Phoenix admin will attend as well. Please mind the tree holes and this operation day.

We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. NO MORE SINGLE BREW PLASTIC CUPS PLEASE! We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.

The garden program has partnered with a muralist and Ms. Ketchum to create a bottle cap mural in the field garden. We will be collecting bottle caps until March 31st. Please drop off all multi-colored plastic caps at the front office or send them to school with your child. After the 31st there will be color sorting, design and installation of the mural. SUPER COOL!

We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards

Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Huge thanks to Will Novak for dropping off our Amazon goodies. The kids are super stoked!
