Words of Wisdom
t's been said that a teacher affects eternity and never knows where his or her influence stops. We know that to be a true statement, but nevertheless, it's difficult to stay conscious of such a grand notion as we move through our ordinary days. Who has time to ponder the fruit of every little action or to consider its effect on perpetuity?
Gandhi offers a more practical approach:
It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.
When we do the right thing — in our lives and in our classrooms — we need not worry about how we are affecting eternity. Eternity will take care of itself.
With something to think about . . .
Remember to take care of yourself.
Taking care of ourselves can sometimes mean taking care of personal business. Is there some action you need to take, one that is right though difficult, one that you may never see bear fruit?
Happy Birthday!
