Middle School Promotion Guidelines
As outlined on page 42-43 of your 2017-18 Student/Parent Handbook:
Promotion A student may be promoted only on the basis of academic achievement or demonstrated proficiency of the subject matter of the course or grade level as stated under TEC §28.021(a). Harmony Public Schools (School) shall consider the following in determining promotion as outlined under TEC §28.021(c).
a) Yearly Average Students in grades 1-8 must achieve an overall cumulative average of 70 or above for all subject areas. For core subjects including Reading/English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science students in grades 1-8 must maintain an end of the year average of 70 or higher for promotion.
b) NWEA MAP Students in grades 1-8 must score in both Reading AND Mathematics NWEA MAP testing at or above the 10th percentile at least once throughout the current school year. If a student passes STAAR assessments in Reading and Mathematics then that student will be exempt from NWEA MAP promotion requirement.
c) Satisfactory Performance on STAAR Assessments In accordance with the TEC §28.0211(a) students in grades 5 & 8 must perform satisfactorily on the Mathematics and Reading STAAR assessments, grade advancement tests. School reserves the right to retain a student failing STAAR Assessments for grades 3rd through 8th.
For students who receive Special Education and/or ESL services, promotion standards may be modified based on ARD and/or LPAC decisions, respectively.
If your student does not meet one or more of the first two criteria above, we will ask them to complete a packet in June, then come in for an exam. If they do not complete the packet or pass the exam, we will hold a GPC for them and decide if they need to be retained or promoted.

Congratulations to Haaris J.
He will participate in the George A. Jeffery NanoExplorers program at the Alan G. MacDiarmid
Nano Tech Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas. The George A. Jeffrey NanoExplorers
Program promotes nanotechnology-based education for high school students entering the 10th-
12th grades. The goal of the program is to inspire high school students to become productive
scientists and engineers by enabling them to do original research work.Students are able to join
a faculty member's research lab based on their interest. They are taught the skills needed to test
their ideas, and how to team, and are encouraged to play with new concepts and to invent. As
much as possible, they are treated like any other member of the lab. The work they do is
associated with actual funded programs at the university and they work to deliver real results.
Again, Congratulations Haaris, we are proud of you!

important message from attendance clerk
Attendance Clerk Mrs.Viviana Olvera
Is your student absent today?
In general, there are two things school needs you to do if your student is going to be absent:
Call the school and report your child absent:
Please call (817) 354-3000 by 9:00 a.m.on the first and each day your student is absent or email the Attendace Clerk at: volvera@harmonytx.org
Why are absence calls necessary?
Excessive absences are considered truancy under state law, the school reserves the right to take extreme absence cases to court. For detailed attendance information please read the Harmony Public Schools student handbook pages 13-15. We really appreciate receiving those calls and emails about absences first thing in the morning as it helps us ensure the safety of all of our students. Thank you!
Send a Written Note:
Upon returning to school, the student must bring a note, signed by the parent that describes the reason for the absence. A note signed by the student, even with the parent’s permission, will not be accepted.
Please do not send notes on post its, index cards or torn pieces of paper. Notes must be received within three days of the absence or the absence will be unexcused.
Extended Absence
Are you planning to take your student out of school for an extended absence? Pre-plan multiple day absences (for any reason) require advance approval by our Principal. Please call 817-354- 3000 or stop by the front office and we will walk you through the authorization process and arrange for homework to be prepared for your student to take with them.
