SHE Houses Program Update
With February in full swing, Summit Hill has been implementing our House program for six months now. The Houses were created to streamline the expectations associated with Leader in Me and the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) initiatives. While all our students and staff are in a House, the program is run by The Summit (previously known as The Lighthouse Team). Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Bowen, Mr. Ely, Ms. Strickland, Mrs. Roy, Ms. Miltenis and Mrs. Landers are all leaders on The Summit. We have been working hard to ensure that 7 Habits of leadership are promoted throughout the building. As your child(ren) have likely already shared with you, our students earn PAWS when they demonstrate one of the 7 Habits. The PAW serves as an intrinsic motivator for our students as opposed to earning an extrinsic prize for good behavior and leadership. So far, more than 5,500 PAWS have been earned by our students this year.
After reviewing the results from the November survey data, we are excited to report that 86% of our students enjoy the Houses program. Many of them shared how proud they feel when they earn a PAW and how much they love being part of a House. Please view the video below to hear about the Houses from some of our students:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PEEUqJOF5hFFD8T6VPAF-gShPgM_5fes/view
While we were happy to see that 86% of our students enjoy the program, we understand that this program is not without refinement. There have been some parent concerns about the Houses promoting competition instead of comrade. In the past, our students have competed throughout the year within their classrooms and grade levels during fundraisers and other events. While the structure of the Houses is different, the competitive element has not changed. With that being said, The Summit is working with our teachers and students to ensure that the Houses continue to promote the 7 Habits of leadership and comrade.
Thank you so much for your continued support as we encourage our students to be their very best. We’re so excited about the leaders they are becoming. Can’t wait to watch them continue to grow!
Margaret White appointed as Associate Superintendent for Professional Learning and Leadership Development
As a district, we are constantly reevaluation our needs to make sure we fulfill our goal to "prepare all students to graduate ready to pursue and succeed on their chosen paths."
Our latest move is to realign our FCS organizational structure with our new strategic plan. Professional Learning and Leadership Development will now be reporting to a new position recently approved by the Board: the Associate Superintendent for Professional Learning and Leadership Development. This position will be a part of the Academics Division.
Margaret White, the current Area Superintendent for the Northwest Learning Community, was appointed by the Superintendent for this new role and began this week. Her years dedicated to our school system and her experience in both professional and leadership development made her a perfect candidate to lead this work.
Until a replacement is named, Cliff Jones, current Area Superintendent for the Northeast Learning Community, will be overseeing both the Northeast and Northwest Learning Communities. With the help from both Area Executive Directors, Eric Hollinhead (NWLC) and Angela Parham (NELC), we are confident that we will be able to continue to provide a high level of service to our schools.

Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose, and will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of illustrations. A first, second, and third place will be chosen from each grade level. Additionally, three stories will be selected for the STEAM Award if their story effectively incorporates science, technology, engineering, arts, and/or mathematics.
The contest is open now until March 31, 2018. The contest is supported by a robust set of resources for children, families, and teachers, including activity sheets and checklists to inspire children during the brainstorming process. For more information, you can go to gpb.org/writers-contest.
