FRIDAY REFLECTION
From the desk of Dr. Tuin, THS Principal
November 12, 2021
This was a unique week with the Thursday holiday to remember our veterans who served our country. Here at Tustin High School, we have three people who served in our armed forces including Mike Seals (English Teacher, Head Wrestling Coach), Kyle Brawley (Behavioral Assistant, Head Swimming Coach), and Keith Martyn (History Teacher, Announcer and Cross Country/Track Coach). Thank you Tillers for your service!
Keith Martyn will join head coach Pablo Guzman to coach and cheer on Audrey Barcenas today as she competes in the first round of the CIF Cross Country meet at Mt. San Antonio College. She will be competing for a spot in moving to the next round. She has had an outstanding year due to a lot of hard work and perseverance. Good luck Audrey!
We have other students who have worked hard during high school and now see that effort paying off, literally. We hosted an early signing day at lunch on Wednesday. Families joined us to celebrate two outstanding athletes who have also done what they needed to do in the classroom to earn impressive scholarships. Riley Kelly plays baseball and will move on to pitch for UCI after this season. His live arm and determined attitude continue to serve him well. Jessica Lin is a gymnast and has competed at a national level for the past 5 years. Her hard work in and out of the classroom has afforded her a scholarship opportunity at Brown University. We are so proud of our Tillers who will go on from high school and represent us well. Go Riley, and go, Jessica!
I had the privileged of learning about another student who has worked extremely hard lately. Ruby Ramos has Directed Studies with Celeste Kelly (yes, Riley’s mother). The two of them were looking at Ruby’s current progress which is an amazing accomplishment in and of itself. Ruby was a student greatly impacted by the whole pandemic learning dynamic and found herself several classes behind and in danger of not graduating. With the help of Mrs. Kelly and her team, Ruby buckled down and made up all her classes this fall. She is doing well in her classes and on track to go to a community college. She would be the first in her family to graduate from high school. It was touching to see Ruby’s sense of accomplishment. The past two years were extremely challenging for some students, and it was great to see an example of a student who turned it around and put herself in a place to accomplish her goals. Way to go Ruby!
Go Tillers!
