Zebra Family Update!

October 2022

Happy Fall!

There is so much going on at LHS this month! Three highlights:

HOMECOMING! We are excited to celebrate Homecoming at LHS this week! There are many activities happening, and details about home athletics events, how to purchase tickets, as well as info on spirit days, are available on our website on our calendar. Visit lhs.wpusd.org and click on the calendar link below the video clips of campus. Additional details are available below! We are excited to welcome current Zebras and their families, and Zebras from the Class of 2022 and earlier to campus to celebrate what it means to be a Zebra - once a Zebra, always a Zebra!

COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS! In addition, we are getting excited about College and Career exploration initiatives that are coming up, including college visits to LHS, taking students on field trips to visit local schools, the Placer County College Fair on 10/17, and the FAFSA night on 11/9. See the Counseling and College & Career Corners below!

AWARENESS ABOUT THE RISKS OF FENTANYL! We hosted a student assembly in late October about the facts of fentanyl in our community. Students heard from three local families who lost young people to fentanyl poisoning. We encourage all WPUSD families to attend our parent night at LHS on 10/19 (flier below). We'll be hosting a family night in Spanish in early November, too.

Big picture

Emails and More Emails - Oh My!

We know that you are receiving a lot of communication from LHS and WPUSD. And if you have multiple children, it is even extra!

Communication comes from a few places:

  • Schoology - this is our internal system of communication regarding activities and grades. This system is used in grades 6 and up. The posted content is geared toward students, but parents get notifications whenever we post updates. See how to adjust your settings for Schoology by clicking here.
  • ParentSquare - you'll be getting more emails from ParentSquare as our teachers start to use it, too. You CAN batch these emails to come once a day - check out this video to find out how. Even if you batch, we do have the option to override and send communication instantly (i.e. in case of an emergency) - so you won't miss anything essential!
  • FinalForm - is our new system for communicating with athletic teams; you'll hopefully see more coming via FinalForm as we continue to launch that platform

If you have any questions about how to access Schoology or ParentSquare - you can find guides for families on our website here.

Class of 2023 - Senior Products!

We are proud to partner with Premier Grad Products and Mr. Bob Sebring to support our Seniors with class rings, grad announcements, caps, tassels, gowns, and specialty Class of 2023 products.

We STRONGLY encourage you to order your Senior's cap and gown early (like this fall!). You can explore their catalog of products and order items online 24/7 here: https://www.premiergradproducts.com/

Premier Grad Products will be on campus to answer questions, show products and take orders on Thursday, 10/27 from 9:30am-12:30pm in the Library.

You can check it out and order online 24/7 here: https://www.premiergradproducts.com/. Photo credit given to https://www.premiergradproducts.com/ and used w/ Mr. Sebring's permission.

LHS Peer Tutoring!

LHS offers an incredible tutoring program that is designed to help students get their homework done, get organized, to ask questions, to get reteaching, and even to take care of test retakes (for some teachers!). We are prepared to offer support in all content areas taught at LHS. The program starts in mid-September, so be watching for more details.

Where:

  • In Person at LHS Library or online using Google Meet - code: LHStutoring

When:

  • M-F from 7:15-8:15am
  • M from 2:30-4:30pm
  • T-Th from 3:30-5:30pm

Want to be a tutor?

Keep in mind, that the library hosts our tutoring program to support students with learning. The library is not open for hanging out during tutoring times - all students must be actively involved in some type of academic activity during the tutoring program hours if they are in the library.

Counseling Corner

Each month, the LHS counselors will provide you with information on hot topic items as well as areas of focus with students. Stay tuned for information on all things college, school success, academic planning, and mental health support. Should you need to reach out to your child’s counselor, here is our contact information:

Senior Focus

Counselors presented information to seniors about what to expect this year. We provided them with information about applying to community college, universities, financial aid, military options & scholarships. The presentation was sent out to parents and students for review. Check parent square if you missed it.

Our next step is to begin meeting individually with each senior. The link to schedule this appointment has been sent to the students via wpusd email. We strongly encouraged students to make their appointments right away, as times fill up quickly. Students need to keep in mind that each counselor has between 100-120 seniors. That is a lot of appointments! Our goal is to complete these meetings no later than Thanksgiving break.

During this meeting, we will create an individualized plan with each student for graduation and beyond. This will include classes needed to graduate, finish pathways, and dates and deadlines to meet goals after high school. Seniors will receive a written & virtual summary of the items covered in the meeting. If any senior does not have a solid plan after graduation, our College & Career Specialist will work closely with him/her to help them develop a plan.

College Application Season Has Begun

This is such an exciting time for our seniors! Where to apply, what major to choose, where do I want to live, are just a few of the decisions that seniors will be making in the coming months. Our senior meetings should help relieve some of the stress by giving students a clear path with a “to-do” list.

If your student is applying to a university, we will be offering several additional events to assist them. On October 11th, during intervention, we will be hosting a CSU/UC Application Information Session. We will review several tips and tricks to get those applications done accurately and on time.

In addition, October 24th-28th is “Application Week.” Counselors will be visiting classrooms beginning on the 25th, to have students log in to their applications so that we can check for accuracy and further assist with completion. It will be a perfect opportunity for students to ask questions and get extra help. Lastly, we will keep reminding them that all the CSU/UC applications are due on November 30th.

Should your student be doing other types of applications, we won’t leave them out! We can review any application and answer all kinds of questions. Our goal is to make sure students have the resources they need. If there is anything we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s counselor.

Look for FAFSA information and other important topics next month!

College & Career Corner

Four Big Things to Know in the College & Career Space. We strongly encourage students to monitor the College and Career Center Group on Schoology for all the latest information!

COLLEGE FAIR! The Placer County College Fair is on Monday, October 17th from 5-8pm at Rocklin High School. Please note that this is a non-school day for LHS. , we don't have school that day. See the blue flier below!

LHS COLLEGE VISITS! Mrs. Vadgama is a rock star and has dozens of schools visiting LHS in person. Check out the flier and RSVP for sessions your Zebra is interested in by scanning the QR code or clicking on this link. All grades are welcome!

FAFSA - IT'S REQUIRED! The FAFSA is the document that gives families access to financial aid, grants, work study, and more so they can pursue education beyond high school. This year, a new law makes it REQUIRED for all Class of 2023 families to complete it. Be watching for more info and save the date for our FAFSA workshop on Wed., 11/9 from 6-8pm at LHS. In the meantime, learn more about the FAFSA here!

WANT TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT YOUR GOALS? Mrs. Vadgama is here to support you with your college & career questions and goals. Our College & Career Center is located at the end of the 70s wing across from the attendance window. She pushes out a lot of information on the College & Career Schoology group, too. Stop by or reach out to svadgama@wpusd.org to see what's happening!
