Graden Parent and Family Newsletter, November 2021

Dear Graden Families,


As we move into November, it is very important for me to thank each of you for always supporting Graden and myself. The pandemic has not made life easy, but with our amazing hornet staff, students and families, we have been resilient and have had many opportunities for celebration. Our students have shown amazing growth in each academic area and have learned to do this using any mode of instruction. I am so proud to walk the halls of Graden and see our students highly engaged in learning opportunities and I feel very fortunate to be a small part in their educational journeys. Thank you for sharing your students with us each and every day.


We completed our Fun Run on Tuesday, October 26th!!! WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I am truly blown away at all of the support we received during this event. Each and every single day we had students come into school excited to learn about the new character trait and they were even more excited for each of the themed days and all of the fun celebrations.


Thank you so much for all of your donations. We raised over $18,000!!! I am so excited that we will be able to start making updates to our playground and schedule the remainder of our cultural arts assemblies for the year. I can't wait for our hornets to see the new equipment and engage in our amazing interest group assemblies.


Our modified trunk or treat was a HUGE SUCCESS!!! I loved seeing all of our students dressed up. Thank you for joining us. I hope you had a wonderful time!


We are so excited to see each of you for Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, November 3rd and Thursday, November 4th. Our teachers cannot wait to share information regarding your child's growth and development over that past few months of school. Our goals is to 100% attendance at Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you are not able to make your schedule time or if you cannot find a time that works with your schedule, please reach out to your classroom teacher to reschedule or select a different date and time. As a reminder, we will not have school on Thursday, November 4th as teachers will be in conferences all day and Friday, November 5th. Mark these dates on your calendar.

*** Please remember, Park Hill has extended their mask mandate and all individuals that enter the building will need to wear a mask. Thanks for helping to support the health and safety of all of our staff and students.


Our November PTA meeting is on Monday, November 8th at 6:30 pm in the Graden library. These nights are times for parents and family members to come together and learn more about the school as well as create opportunities for families to become more involved. If you are interested in joining a PTA meeting, I invite you to come on November 8th. Childcare will be provided.


Students will be out of school Wednesday, November 24th - Friday, November 26th in observance of Thanksgiving. I hope you are able to cherish these days off with your family.

Our teachers are excited to meet with each of you to share the growth and progress of your students. Parent Teacher conferences are Wednesday, November 3rd from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Thursday, November 4th from 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm. If you have not signed up for a conference with your classroom teacher, please reach out to them to schedule a time that works for you.


*** The Scholastic Book Fair will be open each day of conferences. As a reminder, students must be accompanied by an adult at the book fair.

As the weather changes, we will continue to have outdoor recess. Please send student to school prepared to be outside for recess with a jacket.

Food Supply Challenges
We recently shared that food and labor shortages are affecting our ability to get enough food to feed our students.

Because our community and our Board of Education supported our need to build a district warehouse, we can stockpile some foods, if we can get them. This is helping us ensure that we are still able to feed our students, while we look for other sources that allow us to meet the strict federal nutrition guidelines we must follow.

Our students and families might notice that we are offering less options, that our menus might change after we post them, and that we can't get certain foods, like cereal.

We will continue to update you on the impacts of this situation.


New Birthday Treat Guidelines
Because of food and labor shortages, our Nutrition Services department can no longer provide birthday treats after Friday, Sept. 17.

If you already ordered treats, we will be able to fill orders that were scheduled to go out this week. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we must cancel any birthday treat orders that were scheduled to go out on Monday, Sept. 20 or later. If you need a refund, please let us know.

Approved Birthday Treats:
We will start allowing families to send birthday treats if they want to do so, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the major allergens.

Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list, because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.

Please bring birthday treats ahead of time (two hours after the start of school, at the latest).

We will have early release day once a month for teachers and staff to engage in professional development to continue to enhance learning opportunities for students.


We will release ALL students at 2:00 pm on early release days.


Please communicate with your classroom teacher and the office if you have alternate transportation on early release days.

Interest groups will be held on early release days. Each Interest group day will include a virtual assembly and a classroom interest group activity. Students and staff will wear their leadership shirts and engage in Interest Group Day within their stable classrooms. We hope to create amazing opportunities for students to continue practicing Habit 8

COUNSELOR NEWS FROM MISS CETOLA

This month we wrapped up our unit on emotion regulation for all grade levels! Your kids engaged in learning various coping strategies to help manage strong emotions such as hot chocolate and bunny breathing, guided imagery, and calming mantras—to name a few. I encourage you to have them put their skills to the test at home! 😊 Be sure to check out the November newsletter below to see what we are learning about this month! The Park Hill Clothing Center would like to thank all of the families who have contributed to our facility. For anyone not familiar with the clothing center there is more information here: https://www.parkhill.k12.mo.us/families/pta-clothing-center


Volunteers are greatly needed! We have been fortunate to have received numerous donations, however we’ve had a difficult time hanging up all of the incoming clothes. There are two sign up genius links for volunteers: There is one sign up genius for the 2-4 pm timeslot every Tuesday that doesn't have shoppers present. The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
