A note from the Principal
Dear Parents & Caregivers
The word 'communion' means to be united with and, as Catholics, we believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ.
At his last supper, Jesus said of the bread that he shared among his followers, "Take and eat, this is my body." When we receive Holy Communion, we believe that in a mysterious way we are sharing in the body and blood of Christ. Holy Communion and the whole celebration is also known as Eucharist, from a Greek word meaning thanksgiving.
First Eucharist is a special occasion - a further step in becoming one with Christ and united with the People of God. In Western Australia first Eucharist takes place in Year Four. Children should have an understanding of the sacrament that is appropriate to their age. Hopefully, this understanding will further develop over the years.
The church affirms that parents are the first educators of their children in the faith. You are handing on your faith to your children all the time. You have the wonderful responsibility of preparing your child to receive Eucharist for the first time.
However, the school does hold a special place in supporting parents in preparing students to receive their first Holy Communion. Given this, Mrs Thomson has been working very hard with our Year 4 students and on Sunday 12th September they will be receiving Jesus in Holy Communion for the first time. We pray for them and wish them all the best for this very special occasion.
There will be a number of staffing changes for 2022. Information regarding this will be sent home to parents shortly via a separate email letter.
Last Friday, interim reports were sent home informing parents of their child/ren’s school behaviours such as work ethic, emotional regulation, and attitude. If you have been requested or are requesting a meeting, please contact your child's class teachers a.s.a.p. to arrange a time to meet.
Father’s Day Breakfast
This Friday, 3rd September, we will be holding our annual Father’s Day breakfast from 7:30am– 8:30am behind the Library by the back oval. We look forward to enjoying a bacon and egg roll with the dads/uncles/grandads and kids.
Incursions and Clinics
Next week, our students will participate in a Science incursion (Engineers Without Borders) and AFL clinics. Students need to wear their sports uniform on the Thursday please. Both events promise to be exciting opportunities for our students. Thank you to Mrs Sheehan and Mrs Pettersen for organising them.
Our Athletics carnival is planned to take place over two days with the jumping, throwing and long-distance running events planned for Wednesday 15th September, and the sprints and team games planned for Friday 17th September. Information has already been sent home to parents via eldest in the family. If you are available to help on the Wednesday, please return the slip at the bottom of the letter that went out with the timetable as soon as possible.
St Mary’s 2022 Kindergarten program is filling up fast and we are nearly at capacity. If you are interested in enrolling in Kindy next year, please contact the office a.s.a.p. We have places available in all other year groups as well.
If your child has a smart watch and can communicate with you through it, please ensure they are not doing this during school hours. At school, students must speak with the teacher if something is bothering them or they feel sick, and the teacher will support them in the most appropriate way.
Dogs on school ground
We have had several people request to bring their dog to school, either for news or for drop off and pick up. Whilst I love dogs and have one myself, this is problematic, and we would appreciate it if dogs (or pets) could be kept out of the school grounds.
School Opens at 8:30am
We have a large group of students arriving at school before 8:30am at the moment. Unless organised with the class teacher, students are not to arrive at school before 8:30am as there is no one on duty to assume responsibility for them. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Some parents have expressed their concern regarding the speed at which cars are entering and leaving the rear carpark. The safety of our students is paramount and as such I ask all parents to please slow down and keep an eye out for our children when driving through this area and the adjoining streets.
