Supporting Our Staff's Nutrition and Fitness Goals

Healthy Living Challenge - Kickoff Coming Soon

The NWMS Wellness Team challenges all staff members to set a healthy living goal. Your goal may be related to weight loss, fitness, trying a new type of exercise, and/or healthy food choices. Click here for more info and additional ideas. Participants can pair up with a buddy to help promote accountability. The official kickoff will be coming soon, due to the cancellation of the 11/19 Faculty Meeting. Even though we had to push the kickoff back, you can start working toward your goal now!

Want an easy way to get moving? Check out Fit Club every Thursday!

The Fit Club meets every Thursday after school from 3:15-4:30 p.m. in the Small Gym. This is a club for both students and faculty/staff. If you struggle to find time to work out, this is a great way to get in a workout before you leave campus!

Healthy Food Tip - Thanksgiving Edition

"While you might think it makes sense to save up calories for the big meal, experts say eating a small meal in the morning can give you more control over your appetite. Start your day with a small but satisfying breakfast -- such as an egg with a slice of whole-wheat toast, or a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk -- so you won't be starving when you arrive at the gathering." - Kathleen M. Zelman, "10 Tips for a Thinner Thanksgiving,"

Recipe: Chipotle Smashed Sweet Potatoes

2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 chipotle chile pepper in adobo sauce, chopped
1 teaspoon adobo sauce, from the pepper can

Put the sweet potatoes in a steamer basket and put the steamer in a large pot of simmering water that is 1 inch from the bottom of the basket. Cover and steam over medium-high heat for 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.

Remove the steamer basket, pour the water out of the pot and dump the sweet potatoes into the pot. Add the butter and salt and mash with a potato masher. Add the chile and sauce and continue mashing to combine. Serve immediately. Yield: 4 servings.
