Relationship Skills Guidance Lesson
2nd-3rd Grade
Relationship Skills Goal
Students know that communication involves speaking, listening, and nonverbal behavior.
Building Background
Today’s lesson is on relationships. The word relationship means a connection between two people. An example of a relationship is a friendship. So today’s lesson is going to be about friendships that you may have with someone like a classmate, but it could also talk about a relationship you have with a family member like your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, or grandpa. Can anyone tell me why it would be important to have a relationship or friendship? (allow time to answer) That’s right, it is important to have friendships and relationships because it can make us and the people around us happy. It can also make us feel safe and give us a feeling of belonging to something. All of that builds our happiness. But sometimes it is hard to make a friend or relationship. Sometimes there might be problems with our friendships. We could have what is called a conflict. A conflict is when one or both people are upset or angry with the other person. Raise your hand if you have ever had a conflict with someone before? That’s right, we all have had conflicts before. And conflicts are okay. Today we are going to learn how we can work through a conflict.
Mindful Moment
Watch Conflict Management with Bear and Moose
What happened with the Bear and Moose? That’s right. They were in a conflict about who was going to pass on the bridge first. Do you think they handled their conflict correctly? No, I agree, the way they were treating each other was not kind at all. How did the Rabbit and Raccoon feel while Bear and Moose were fighting? That’s right. They didn’t like it at all. But then, did you notice that Rabbit and Raccoon had the same conflict? How did they solve their conflict? That’s right, they worked together to come up with a solution.
Watch Enemy Pie
Questions after watching:
What does the word “enemy” mean to you?
Why do you think children have enemies?
Why was Jeremy Ross on his “enemy list”?
What did the boy learn from spending the entire day with his number one enemy?
How did he manage to turn his enemy into a friend?
The Human Knot Activity
Directions:
Get the group to form a circle.
Tell them to put their right hand up in the air, and then grab the hand of someone across from them.
Then repeat this with the left hand, ensuring they grab a different persons hand.
Check to make sure that everyone is holding the hands of two different people and they are not holding hands with someone on either side of them.
Now try to untangle themselves to form a circle without breaking the chain of hands. Allocate a specific time to complete this challenge (generally ten to twenty minutes)
Get participants to take their time in order to limit injuries. Ask the group not to tug or pull on each other and spot participants as they pass over other participants. Monitor throughout the challenge and stop them if you need to.
If the chain of hands is broken at any point, they must then start over again.
