Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
All students will demonstrate growth in their social-emotional learning.
From the Principal
As we gear up for this long holiday weekend, I’d like to take a moment to list some very special people who deserve my thanks:
Our students– You bring joy into each day here at Winfield. YOU are the reason we are an amazing place to learn and grow.
Our parents– Without you, our efforts alone would not be enough. You are truly partners in our mission to provide continuous academic improvement in a safe environment.
Our teachers– Your dedication to the students of Winfield is a testament to what makes a great teacher. You bring the art and science of teaching to life.
Our secretaries– The knowledge you bring about school operations, and the patience you show with all of our families is unmatched.
Our nurse– My thanks for you are unending. You take care of all the bumps, bruises, and the icky stuff, too. You help keep our students healthy and safe.
Our custodial staff– Your shared commitment to keeping a neat, clean, and organized environment helps teachers focus on what they do best– teaching.
Our kitchen staff– Every day you try to fill the bellies of our students with “good for you” food choices, so they can fill their minds with learning.
Our educational support staff– We are closing academic and social-emotional achievement gaps because of you. Never forget how important you are to the life of one child.
Our CAFE/PTO– Overachievers are my kind of people! Your group is always going above and beyond expectations to support our students and teachers. You are vital to our success.
Our community– The time, talent, and treasure you share with Winfield Elementary clearly demonstrates we are “all in this together.”
This Thanksgiving I am thankful for my family, friends, and health. In addition, I am especially thankful that I am privileged to serve the students and families of Winfield Elementary.

Home-School Connections
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Winfield families! Be Thankful!
Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire, if you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times, during those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary, because it means you’ve made a difference.
It is easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.
GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings. ~Author Unknown

Child Abuse and Sexual Abuse Prevention Education for Students
Recently, the Indiana legislature adopted new legal requirements that “each Indiana public school, including charter schools and accredited nonpublic schools, shall provide age appropriate and research and evidence-based instruction on child abuse and child sexual abuse to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Note that this expands the previous requirement from providing education in grades 2-5 to grades K-12.” In order to meet the new requirements, Crown Point school counselors and home-school facilitators will be providing age appropriate, research-informed student personal safety sessions in December 2018 and January 2019. At the elementary level, students will learn the Protect Yourself Rules with their counselor or home-school facilitator in a classroom session of 30-40 minutes. Parents can view the Protect Yourself Rules and related materials at the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation website fightchildabuse.org.
Parents are encouraged to contact Jim Hardman, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, or Deb Ciochina, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction, with questions or concerns at 219.663.3371 or jhardman@cps.k12.in.us or dciochina@cps.k12.in.us.

Your child's birthday will be announced on the morning announcements and he/she is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
