26th Amendment Passed
Voting Age now 18
What does this mean for us?
The 26th amendment added to the constitution now lowers the required voting age from 21 to 18. It was passed on July 1st, 1971. Student Activists that were against the vietnam war pushed for the amendment. Many young veterans are for this amendment saying that if they are old enough to fight and die for their country, they are old enough to vote for their country. 38 states ratified it and after that 4 more followed through.
The amendment was started by President Nixon on Jun 22, 1970 when he made a law stating that the voting age was now 18. It was taken to the supreme court in Oregon vs Mitchell. The supreme court viewed the law unconstitutional to lower voting age for local elections.
