Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Monday was a great beginning to 2nd trimester. Students and Staff were resilient and adapted to the later start and were able to get to all of their new courses. Grades for first trimester are available in Parent/Studentvue. It is a great time to talk with your students about their first trimester grades. One of the nice things about the new trimester is that students get a fresh start on their classes. It is important that they stay on top of their assignments. Please reach out to teachers if you have questions about the syllabi from this new trimester.
This past week seniors and staff were able to sign a large beam that will be a part of the new wing. It was a fun chance to have our mini “time capsule” with names that will be on the beam for decades to come. Thanks to Bremick Construction and Mahlum Architects for making it happen. Construction is coming along, and it is exciting to see the outline of the building take shape. Check out the pictures below!
Do you know a school staff member who has made a difference in your life, the life of a child you know, or in our community? Together, Kiwanis and Canby School District offer the Canby Area Recognition of Excellence (CARE) Award program to provide opportunities to recognize staff members who excel in supporting our children. This award shows staff how important they are to our community. Fill out this form in English or this form in Spanish to nominate a staff member.
Finally, this is a busy time of year as we look forward to Winter Break. Coming up this week is a number of athletics and activities. Please check out the events below. Please note that due to limited seating, the choir concerts are by ticket invite only.
I hope the season brings you joy and the time to be with family and friends. Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
If your student will be missing extended school due to travel, please make arrangements for them by contacting our Attendance Secretary Jessie Munoz at (503)263-7210. Jessie will help you ensure all of the proper paperwork is complete. We will then set students up for support with our teacher Tonya Boustead. Tonya can help students and teachers create a plan to stay up to date with school work while they are gone.
Curriculum Renewals 2022-2023
Each school year, the Canby School District leads a curriculum renewal process in a core content area. This school year we will be renewing our K-12 health curriculum and our 9-12 world languages curriculum. We are looking for 2-4 parents who represent different schools and levels to participate on one of our curriculum committees. Committee members will participate in professional learning, join committee meetings during the day or after school and observe the review process. If you are interested in participating or learning more about the committee, please contact your building principal. The Teaching and Learning team will then contact you with more information. Note that all parents, whether on a committee or not, will have the opportunity to view curriculum and provide input. We will hold information nights and input opportunities as part of our review process.
Inclement Weather
As the temperatures get colder, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather! If the weather is severe enough to cancel school, the first day of inclement weather will be a snow day for all! Any inclement weather day thereafter will be an online learning day. Elementary school families, this means you may see iPads come home with your students if questionable weather is forecasted.
In the event of an online learning day, Canby High School will begin at 8:40 a.m. and all other schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students should watch for Zoom links from their teachers. If students have trouble connecting or need help, they should reach out to their teacher. Canby School District strives to make the most of this valuable educational time, but please know that students will not be penalized if they are unable to connect.
To make sure you’re set to receive information about school delays, or closures, and online learning days, please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert. Now is also a good time to update your text preferences online by listing your phone number.
For more information, please see our inclement weather page.
Can you give a positive "shout out" to one or more CHS staff members? We'd love to let teachers, staff, bus drivers, kitchen staff, custodians, instructional assistants, office staff, and administrators know how much you appreciate them. Please consider sending a thank you/kudos/great job/shout out to a staff member you appreciate. The staff love and appreciate it. Go to this link to submit a “shout out:” https://goo.gl/forms/dUgaYYAJEkOCN46D3 Staff shout outs are anonymous when sent out.

The College and Career Center traveled to Grand Canyon University (GCU) for a Meet GCU event. They learned about the Honors College, dual enrollment, live lessons for high school teachers to take advantage of, Canyon Professional Development, and Discover GCU. They even met up with some former graduates from CHS, got a tour of their living quarters, and took them out to dinner.

We have all of our athletics schedule all in one place on our master athletic schedule. This includes game times, locations, and bus departure times. It is updated real-time by your athletic department. Go to this link to see the current schedule, which is subject to change with little notice.

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
Information for Seniors
Watch your email for graduation information! It is very important for seniors and senior families to check the “Graduation Information” link often. Find it under “Quick Links” on the right side of the CHS website.
Latest update: the senior schedule is linked on the “Graduation Information” page. Please check back often for updates.
