Specialists Collaborate to Teach Research Skills
Students in grades 3-5 learned about the Big 6 research process through a sea turtle conservation project. Check out what our students did in each class:
Computer: Students learned about the Big 6 Research model, using proper search terms in Google, evaluating sources for reliability, and citing their sources. Students composed and mailed a letter to a sea turtle conservation society about what they learned and questions they still have.
Library: Students learned about the Big 6 Research model, how to form a research question, and how to make a research log. They used their logs in the computer lab while they conducted research.
Art: Students looked at paintings of sea turtles and drew a composition of a sea turtle. Neon watercolor paints were used to create the look of air brushed sea turtles.
Music: Students used their research information on Sea Turtles from Computer and Library to work in groups to write a rhythmic poem. Students used this poem to compose rhythms and pitches for their musical composition. Students collaboratively decided on how to perform their composition using voices, recorders, xylophones, drums, etc.
