Heartland MS - Remote Learning
Inclement Weather - 2024
It's A Remote Learning Day!
Greetings Heartland Students/Families!
Welcome to a virtual day of education! Due to inclement weather and dangerous road conditions, Edmond Public Schools will move to remote learning for all schools for Monday January 22, 2024. Should you have any questions regarding remote learning instructions please email your student's grade level counselor or administrator.
Veronica Johnson - Lead Principal, 6th Grade
Laura Brown - Asst. Principal, 7th Grade
Paul McQueen - Asst. Principal, 8th Grade
Kim Treece - 6th Grade Counselor
What To Expect:
Teachers should have instructional items posted to Canvas between 8:00am and 8:30am. This may include learning activities and/or short instructional videos. Yes - new curriculum may be introduced on remote learning days so it is important that your student stay engaged during this process. Additionally, your student has the opportunity to interact with the classroom teacher in live Google Meet sessions. (See schedule below) The Google Meet sessions are not designed to introduce new instruction. Instead, they are offered to reinforce learning. This is a great time to ask questions... The Google Meet sessions are not required of your student. However, classroom instruction continues to move forward so this is a PERFECT opportunity to make sure that your student has all the information they need for success.
Most teachers will host 2 live Google Meet sessions. However, Advanced Math or IA English may only have one. Additionally, we have a few teachers who teach 2 and 3 different subjects and they may only have one session for your student. Please look at Canvas for details regarding your sessions. If your student takes advantage of these sessions - they would only need to attend one of the two. Most teachers offer two as a way to meet the needs of varying family schedules.
Questions:
* Does my student know how to log into Google Meet? Yes --- In most classes, they should simply have to click on the link in their canvas when it is time for their Google Meet session.
* Does the student Chromebook have a microphone and a camera? Yes - I suggest using a pair of headphones when on a Google Meet. This makes the whole process easier and helps reduce feedback.
When we've hosted Google Meet sessions with faculty - we've found that the closer you are to the Wi-fi source - the better. Also, make sure you are aware of what is behind your student or "in the camera view" so to say. We want to avoid all awkward situations for everyone.
When will my student have Google Meet sessions?
Please remember that these sessions are not mandatory - but offered as a resource to the students. Also - as a key to help navigate this process --- when a timeslot begins, all classes in that content area will host Google Meet sessions. (Example: @ 10:30am - all Heartland Social Studies classes will be hosting live Google Meet sessions)
Again - your student does not need to attend both sessions. We simply offer two opportunities for students who may have difficult schedules on remote learning days.
Keeping a Schedule
The success of remote learning is to keep a schedule.
Teacher workdays are 8 am-3:30 pm.
Helpful Hints to Successful Remote Learning-
- Charge Your Chromebook
- Check Canvas for coursework.
- Have a special work area for school time! (keep distractions limited- no TV, no cell phone, etc.)
- Sit where the wifi signal is best
- Have Ear Buds!!!!
- Daily Work- login to your Chromebook, check your Gmail, check your canvas, check your class for assignments and google meets, move through each class accordingly
- Questions- email teacher and/or show up for google meets
- Complete any incomplete work or assignments
- Take breaks periodically
Questions???
If students have questions or seem stuck on an assignment they should email the teacher and show up for a google meet.
If students expect a timely response it would be important to email them during the school day hours and, an even better time would be to attend a scheduled google meet.
