Student Tips for Successful Virtual Learning
The staff at CRHS has spent some time pausing to reflect on what we have learned so far this school year to ensure that we have a successful close to semester one and prepare for semester two. Our hope is that covid numbers will decline and we will move quickly through the recovery plan phases to get our students back in school soon, at least to phase 5 which is a blended learning environment (see graphic below). In the blended learning environment students will return to the building part of the week and continue virtual learning part of the week. With that in mind we developed some tips to help students and parents during virtual instruction.
The following tips have been shared by CRHS students and teachers. These are tips that have proven to help keep students on track and successful in a virtual learning environment.
Create a workspace that isn’t your bed! Going to a table or desk where your materials are readily available helps you study and work more efficiently. Staying in bed encourages students to fall back asleep and not be truly engaged in instruction.
Get yourself/keep yourself into a regular routine. Don’t stay up too late. Wake up early so you have time to get ready and check your phone and email before your first period, that way you’re not distracted during class. Get dressed each morning. Make sure your materials are ready and you are ready for school the night before.
Create a study/work schedule. You will have some assignments outside of your zoom time. Create a schedule or to do list to keep yourself on track. Prioritize your assignments, especially larger ones so that you don’t get behind.
Know your schedule and your resources.
Stay engaged. Participate in zoom meetings by showing your camera, responding in the chat, or verbally participating. Ask questions when you are confused. Interact in break out rooms and main session. Use flex time if you need more help.
Collaborate and connect with peers. Examples: Snapchat your outfit, collaborate on a project, remind each other of due dates in group chats… now more than ever use your cell phone for good! Support each other!
Minimize distractions during zoom meetings. Work in a room where you can close the door and keep out the noise and anything else that might attract your attention.
Charge your computer every night so it is ready for the next day.
Shut the computer down completely once at least once a week so it has a chance to reset itself, this prevents many tech issues.
During instruction, turn off or silence your phone, put it away. Email, text, and app notifications are distractions that undermine learning. Students that are able to put the phone away are more successful than those are on their phones.
Again, use your phone for good. Use it to set reminders and alerts about assignments and due dates, but not as a distraction during zoom.
Get some movement in your day. Walk away from your computer during breaks. Simple exercises are good for your total wellness.
Give yourself things to look forward to. Plan safe social times. Plan a zoom lunch with your friends or a facetime.
Go outside, even when it’s cold. Vitamin D is essential for growth and bone development, but it can also reduce feelings of depression and improve mood. Get outside for at least 30 minutes daily.
Again, I am hopeful that we will see each of you in person this year, the building is not the same without all of you! Please reflect on the tips above and make adjustments to your at home learning environment and your daily routines as needed.
Stay safe and healthy,
Dr. VonDenBosch

CAP AND GOWN ORDERS
All students and families who have yet to order have been contacted via email. The price of the cap and gown unit has now increased to $58.25 (tax included). I will still send reminders, as all orders need to be finalized by March 1, 2021.
Four ways to order:
www.jostens.com - pay with credit card (in full or 3 equal payments)
Call 800.JOSTENS (567-8367) - pay with a credit card in part or in full
Mail order form to Jostens - pay by check, money order, credit card; can order now and pay later
Send Mrs. France (france.bernadette@ccpsstaff.org) the height and weight of your senior. She will place the order. THIS IS FOR CAP AND GOWN ONLY. Payment can be made at a later date.
SENIOR CLASS DUES
Information about senior class dues will be coming soon. Remember, if you paid dues last year as a junior, we are counting that for your senior dues as well (since we did not use any of that money last year). If you sold enough through fundraising, you may owe nothing. Stay tuned for more details about this. Dues help pay for graduation/senior year related expenses and activities.
GRADUATION
Graduation is still scheduled for June 4th. As conditions and restrictions change, more information about this will be shared.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the advisors (sousa.michael@ccpsstaff.org and france.bernadette@ccpsstaff.org). We may not have all the answers right now, but we are working hard to make this a successful senior year for all!!!
