Investment Casting Overview

An Investment Casting Facility can be broken into 4 major departments:

  • Wax
  • Shell
  • Foundry
  • Finishing

Each department is specialized and essential to the overall process. Wax is the beginning of the whole process and sets the tone for the final product.

Wax Part 1: Tooling

Why is tooling so important?

Tooling, also called a die or mold is what dictates the geometry of your wax pattern or part, and ultimately the final casting. The tool is what the wax is injected into and is reusable for a long period of time (years).

Since the wax pattern represents the geometry and features of the casting it is critical that you have good tooling that can deliver a consistent wax pattern. Historically tooling was "manual" requiring manual core pulls and manual pattern removal from the tool resulting in potential mishaps and deformation of the wax pattern. Modern wax presses now have computers which can control Semi-Automatic tooling resulting in less human interaction thus decreasing the opportunity for wax pattern deformation. Semi-Automatic tooling cuts down on the total time it takes to produce a wax pattern in addition to delivering a more consistent pattern and final casting.

Using Semi-Automatic Tooling at TPM is one example of TPM's efforts to lower the overall cost to produce a casting which ultimately equates to a lower cost casting for you the customer.
