Weekly Update- January 12, 2017

Week at a Glance

Well, between a snow day on Monday, testing on Wednesday, and now an early dismissal today, we've had quite a crazy week!!

Reading- We started a new read aloud- Wonder. I'm excited about the conversations regarding empathy that will arise from reading this book! We have also discussed main idea and done some reading about Martin Luther King Jr.

Math- We are on Unit 4 for math, which is heavily focused on time and measurement. I am so impressed with how much students already know about time.

Science/Social Studies- This week we discussed Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he had, and still has, on the world. For science we will begin a unit on circuits the week after next.

Writing- We are starting a new writing unit and taking a deep dive into informational texts. Students began the unit by making a list of things they feel they are an expert at, and could teach others.

MAP Testing

We will take the reading MAP test on Wednesday, January 17th. Please be sure your child gets a good night of sleep and eats breakfast that morning. This will be another chance for students to meet the requirement for the 3rd grade guarantee.

No School on Monday, January 15th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Math Fluency Suggestions

Here is a research article, written by Jo Boaler, a researcher out of Stanford, that discusses evidence based ways to learn math facts.

Fluency Without Fear: Research Evidence on the Best Ways to Learn Math Facts

The end of the article has several printable activities that you could use at home with your child. I am a huge fan of Jo Boaler's work and research! Enjoy. :)
