The Five Food Groups.
Know what to eat!
First group: Fruits.
It's important to have fruits everyday for every meal. Fruits can have just enough healthy sugars for you. Some examples of fruits to eat are apples, pears, bananas, and oranges. If you are craving a snack, instead of a bag of chips, maybe eat an apple!
Second group: Grains.
Grains are very good for you. For example, they reduce the risk of heart disease or heart failure. If you don't have any idea what a grain is, here are some ideas, bread and cereal are both grains. Make sure not to get the cereal full of sugar!
Third group: Vegetables.
It's important to eat vegetables because they provide necessary nutrients for your body. Some examples of vegetables are carrots or tomatoes.
Fourth group: Protein.
Protein builds and repairs tissue. It's important because it can give you energy if you just woke up. It can also help if you just had a game or practice and help you gain energy. Some examples of food with protein are meat, poultry, and seafood.
Fifth group: Dairy.
Dairy has calcium which is used for building up bones and teeth. Dairy products are the first source of calcium in an American's diet. Any milk products are an example of a dairy product.
