HOMECOMING 2022
Duluth East is Proud to be a Special Olympics UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOL!
Core Components of Champion Schools
- Inclusive Sports provide opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to participate in a variety of fitness and sports activities alongside one another. At East these activities include our Unified PE Class, the Unified Track and Field Invitational that started last spring, our Victory Day Football game that started this year, and a Bowling Invitational that will be held for the first time this December at the Incline Station.
- Inclusive Youth Leadership encourages students with and without intellectual disabilities to take on leading roles as they work with adults in the school to create a socially inclusive environment through sports and other activities. East's Circle of Friends Club strives to create a more inclusive, accepting student culture at East High School; to reduce incidents of bullying, and promote disability awareness among students and staff at East. Students participate in activities that promote collaboration, friendship, and cooperation between students. Activities include art projects, games, cooking, and sports. Leaders from this group are also representatives on East's Combined Student Leadership Team, P.O.V.
- Whole School Engagement opportunities are awareness and education activities that promote respect and social inclusion and reach the majority of
students and school staff members. This year East will continue to host World Down Syndrome Day and Rock Your Socks off campaign on March 21st. This year we will also hold Words Matter Week. Alongside Sources of Strength, Boundless, and GSA we will talk about person- first language in terms of mental health and disabilities, along with Spread the Word to End the Word campaign activities, and some information and learning sessions on pronouns!
This says a lot about who we strive to be as Greyhounds. Our students and staff have worked hard to earn this Champion School Status and are thankful for the participation and support of our entire school community! Unified Champion Schools work to reduce bullying and exclusion, promote inclusive friendships, overturn negative attitudes, decrease hurtful language in the schools and community, develop students' leadership skills, and to create communities of caring and respect.

School Climate Survey on Monday, October 3
As an integral part of the school community at Duluth East High School, we want to hear the students’ voice to improve climate and culture. These surveys are anonymous which means students will not be asked their name nor will we know who submitted the survey.
If students do not feel comfortable answering a question they may select “I prefer not to answer.” If you would like your child to opt out of the survey please email jody.geissler@isd709.org or simply have them refrain from taking the survey.
This information is essential feedback to ensure the school climate is safe, supportive, and inclusive for all students.

Saturday School and Prescription for Success
Prescription for Success during Saturday School is an opportunity for students to complete unfinished school work, complete projects or tests and quizzes, and to receive tutoring from an East National Honor Society Student. The Prescription for Success is a voluntary agreement between teacher and student that allows for work to be made up during Saturday School. Quality work completed during that time will be given at least 60% credit. Students can be assigned a specific tutor to assist while at Saturday School. Students should see their classroom teacher if they would like to take part in Prescription for Success or would like a tutor for Saturday School.
Saturday School also provides an opportunity for students who have lost credit due to excessive absences and tardies to meet time requirements to earn those credits back.
