Chapter 1 - Spencer Gradel - 4/10 - 4A
"People who think dying is the worst thing don't know a thing about life." - Lily
Lily says this in the beginning of the novel during her explaination of her earlier life. This is an important quote because Lily’s life has been serverly affected by her mother’s death. This suggests that living with someone else’s death can actually be more painful that dying yourself.
“It took me a month to get over the shock of having life possibilities.” - Lily
This qoute really emphasizes how low Lily has thought of herself her whole life. Once she realizes that she has potential, she doesn't know how to react to it. It would be like discovering a whole new part of you that you didn't even know existed.
“Please, Lily, you are insulting your fine intelligence. Do you have any idea how smart you are?” - Mrs. Henry
Lily’s teacher says this to her when Lily mentions that she wants to be a hairdresser. This is an important quote because it shows that Lily’s self-esteem is low from living with her father and that believing someone can be a very powerful force. After Mrs. Henry says this to Lily, Lily believes she can be a writer and practices whenever she has free time.
