Santan Quarterly Report
Q1 2019
Letter from the "Editor" ... Mrs. Kowalinski
Dear Santan Junior High Families:
Fall Intersession is right around the corner. I hope you are able to get out with your family and see some of the beautiful seasonal changes up north! Thank you to all of our families that donated to our check-a-thon. Together we raised close to $15000.00 for our school. The Harkins Movie Gift Card and Honey Baked Ham fundraisers are right around the corner. It is a personal favorite of mine, because everyone loves a movie. Look for information in this newsletter.
The front parking lot is always a busy place! We want to keep your children safe and, at the same time, help the traffic move efficiently. As a reminder, please do the following when you are picking up your children:
Pick up to the north of the crosswalk.
Do not pick up in the parking lot as you are driving in. This is unsafe for your child.
Students and parents should not cross the driveway anywhere except the cross walk, located in front of the administration building.
Thanks for your help on this!
Students return to school on Tuesday, October 15th. The teachers are busy planning many wonderful learning projects for their students. Speaking of teachers, aren’t they all wonderful? Show your support to that one special teacher by having your child nominate him/her for the Silver Apple Award sponsored by Channel 3’s Arizona’s Family. It is easy to do: Students nominate a teacher by logging onto:
azfamily.com/silverapple
In 100 words or less, tell the judges “why this teacher is special.” It must be signed by the principal, so when it is finished, I am happy to sign.
On behalf of our administrators and our staff, enjoy a cooler intersession.
Educationally yours,
Barbara J. Kowalinski
Principal
NOTE: Santan Junior High office will be closed Wednesday, November 27 –December 1, for the Thanksgiving holiday. There is no school for students, Wednesday, November 27, which is a change from previous years. The main office will be closed, too. Thank you!

AVID 2019-2020
AVID 2019-2020
In looking to this school year, please know we have downsized our AVID program to include just the 8th grade. The following year we will not be offering AVID at Santan Junior. Our two main feeder high schools (Basha and Perry), no longer have an AVID program to offer students. We will however continue to teach and support all of our students school wide using proven AVID teaching and Executive Function strategies in our content classes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our AVID Administrator, Assistant Principal Mary Ann Rezzonico 480-883-4616 rezzonico.maryann@cusd80.com
MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER COLE
Hello all, I just wanted to wish everyone a fun and safe fall break before the week is over. For those of you that don’t know me I am Officer Cole, your School Resource Officer. For this school year , and for an unknown amount in the future, I am splitting my police duties between Santan Junior and Andersen Junior high school. Having been a police officer for 20 years I have been challenged often, as this career often is , and this year covering two schools has been not only challenging in its own right, but also extremely interesting. While the two schools have many differences there is an unfortunate similarity amongst two schools’ student population. That similarity is students vaping at school or bringing vaping or e-cigs paraphernalia to school. I wanted to ensure a message was sent out prior to the end of fall break so your child is aware of both the health dangers , but also the legal dangers of vaping or using similar products.
If a junior high aged student is caught with a vape device or similar product is guilty of the following crime:
13-3622. Furnishing of tobacco product, vapor product or tobacco or shisha instruments or paraphernalia to minor; minor accepting or receiving tobacco product, vapor product or tobacco or shisha instruments or paraphernalia; illegally obtaining tobacco product, vapor product or tobacco or shisha instruments or paraphernalia by underage person; classification; definitions
A. A person who knowingly sells, gives or furnishes a tobacco product, a vapor product or any instrument or paraphernalia that is solely designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco or shisha, including a hookah or water pipe, to a minor is guilty of a petty offense.
B. A minor who buys, or has in his possession or knowingly accepts or receives from any person, a tobacco product, a vapor product or any instrument or paraphernalia that is solely designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco or shisha, including a hookah or water pipe, is guilty of a petty offense, and if the offense involves any instrument or paraphernalia that is solely designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco or shisha, shall pay a fine of not less than one hundred dollars or perform not less than thirty hours of community restitution.
C. A minor who misrepresents the minor's age to any person by means of a written instrument of identification with the intent to induce the person to sell, give or furnish a tobacco product, a vapor product or any instrument or paraphernalia that is solely designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco or shisha, including a hookah or waterpipe, in violation of subsection A or B of this section is guilty of a petty offense and, notwithstanding section 13-802, shall pay a fine of not more than five hundred dollars.
If a student is caught in the near future at school with a device or product that violates this statute it is highly probable that I will be issuing a citation to that student. The citation will have a pending court in the afternoon hours , on a week day, and is punishable with a fine ranging from $100.00 to $150.00. I’m sure no parent reading this wants to remove their child early from school to go to a court hearing for a mistake that could have been easily avoided, so please ensure your student understands the seriousness of the issue. In regards to the health consequences of vaping, there is new data coming out regularly on the dangers of vaping. Those dangers range from the devices “blowing up” in user’s hands, to nicotine addiction, and unsafe additives in the flavoring. I think we can all agree the safest thing for your child to put into in their lungs is oxygen and not nicotine. Thank you for your time and please sit down with your kids and advise them of this message.
Respectfully,
Officer Cole.
BEING IN THE "KNOW" ABOUT SEXTING
This month, please take some time to review an on-going problem that our nation is facing. Although at Santan we have very few encounters in the following arena, it is important that we keep our parents informed.
Throughout the country, as well as within the school district, there has been a not-so-new trend occurring, which is known as “Sexting”. It is likely that your child has a cellular telephone and with that comes responsibility. Unfortunately children have and are misusing their cellular telephones by taking photo/video images of themselves nude and forwarding them to friends. Please take a moment to educate your children. Besides the personal problems that would occur, there is also a law that is being broken. To date, it is a FELONY to be in possession of these photographs/videos. It is also a FELONY for minors to take nude photographs/videos of themselves; both of which can lead to an arrest. Education is key. If your child or someone you know happens to be the recipient of a nude photograph/video of a minor, report it to the local police department immediately. Do NOT send, reply to, or delete the text. Close your phone and wait for a police response.
Santan’s Student Resource Officer (SRO) Richard Cole will be presenting a Power-point presentation regarding sexting to our 7th and 8th graders during the school year. The presentation is tastefully done and will help keep our students safe and in the right mind for making good decisions.
Below, please find a list of the laws that govern “sexting” in order to keep you informed. It is our mission at Santan to help your child be an informed decision maker. Together, we can make a difference for all of our students.
13-3506. Furnishing harmful items to minors; applicability; classification
A. It is unlawful for any person, with knowledge of the character of the item involved, to recklessly furnish, present, provide, make available, give, lend, show, advertise or distribute to minors any item that is harmful to minors.
B. This section does not apply to the transmission or sending of items over the internet.
C. A violation of this section is a class 4 felony.
13-3559. Reporting suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor; immunity
A. Any communication service provider, remote computing service, system administrator, computer repair technician or other person who discovers suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor on a computer, computer system or network or in any other storage medium may report that discovery to a law enforcement officer.
B. A person who on discovery in good faith reports the discovery of suspected visual depictions of sexual exploitation of a minor is immune from civil liability.
C. It is an affirmative defense to a prosecution for a violation of section 13-3553 that on discovery a person in good faith reports the discovery of unsolicited suspected visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of a minor.
13-3553. Sexual exploitation of a minor; evidence; classification
A. A person commits sexual exploitation of a minor by knowingly:
1. Recording, filming, photographing, developing or duplicating any visual depiction in which a minor is engaged in exploitive exhibition or other sexual conduct.
2. Distributing, transporting, exhibiting, receiving, selling, purchasing, electronically transmitting, possessing or exchanging any visual depiction in which a minor is engaged in exploitive exhibition or other sexual conduct.
B. If any visual depiction of sexual exploitation of a minor is admitted into evidence, the court shall seal that evidence at the conclusion of any grand jury proceeding, hearing or trial.
C. Sexual exploitation of a minor is a class 2 felony and if the minor is under fifteen years of age it is punishable pursuant to section 13-705.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Counselors have been in classrooms this quarter promoting R-Cubed, which is Santan’s Anti-bullying Program:
R3
Recognize – Increase understanding and awareness of bullying behavior and its effects.
Refuse – Do not accept bullying by allowing self or others to be bullied…stand up and take action.
Report – If you are a victim or a witness to bullying, report it.
Please help us stop bullying at Santan by encouraging your child to participate in this program. Thank you!
Throughout the month of September, Santan students were shown a video from the Signs of Suicide Program. After the video, they were each given a resource card with suicide prevention hotline numbers and suicide warning signs. In addition, if a student felt like he/she needed to talk about himself/herself or a friend, counselors were available.
Santan counselors strongly believe in fostering relationships with our students and their families and supporting them in any way we can, so please feel free to reach out to one of us at any time. In addition, mental health resources are available on the SJHS website under the Resources/Counselors tab.

TAX CREDIT DONATION
ATTENTION PARENTS!!
http://www.cusd80.com/Domain/5058
Each parent is encouraged to activate their account at the start of the school year to assure that they are well informed of student progress. Santan's Parent portal manager is MaryAnn Rezzonico, rezzonico.maryann@cusd80.com, should you require set-up assistance or have further questions. Portal accounts will allow parents to check their child's academic progress at any time during the school year.
****Payment for ALL extracurricular activity fees will be done online via the "Parent Portal" in Infinite Campus by selecting InTouch Fee Payments. Please be sure you are enrolled.****
In order to utilize tax credit monies, the State of Arizona set forth a requirement that all school districts must charge a fee for enrolled students to participate in extracurricular activities. Primary guardians will need to continue to make payments through Infinite Campus so that the fees will link directly to their children and so they have a record of their payments. All other community members will be able to continue to utilize the third party online donation website. In addition to automating the fee collection process, both electronic fee payment systems help CUSD move towards becoming paperless.
Infinite Campus is currently the District’s best solution to automatically track extracurricular activity fees at an individual level. Moving to Infinite Campus provides parents with the convenience of making debit, credit or e-check payments and helps alleviate the work load for site administrative assistants and district staff since there is no longer a need to track fees manually for 45,000 students. Infinite Campus will significantly reduce employee overtime and allow employees to focus on other important tasks. While the third party donation website does allow designations to a student it will not link automatically to their account without a manual adjustment by staff. This is why parents are directed to Infinite Campus and all other community members use the third party donation system.
Please continue to check the Santan Junior High website and register for Schoolwires for important updates. You can also "like" us on Facebook (Santan Junior High) and Twitter (@SantanStorm).
